World Mental Health Day: Are We All in the Dark About Mental Health?

World Mental Health Day was initiated by the World Psychiatric Association (WPA) in 1992, and is observed annually on October 10th. Every year, countries around the world prepare rich and well-organized activities for this day, including producing and promoting videos to encourage mental development health, setting up 24-hour psychological support hotlines, broadcasting feature films, and more.

The World Health Organization believes that mental health is a state of well-being in which every individual can realize their own potential, cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community.

What behaviors might be signs of mental illness?

Changes in mood, such as becoming silent and sad, or suddenly becoming lively and happy; even ecstatic, easily irritated, short-tempered, talking excessively, having inflated or grandiose self-evaluation, or exhibiting strange and bizarre talk, thoughts, and behavior—these phenomena may indicate the emergence of mental illness.

Good prognosis with early detection and treatment

There can be some prodromal manifestations in the early stages of mental illness. These early changes include the following aspects:

  • Change in Temperament:A usually gentle person becomes unreasonable, unapproachable, and easily angered; a typically enthusiastic and sociable person becomes taciturn, less active, and indifferent.
  • Emotional Changes:A usually quiet person suddenly becomes talkative, emotionally high, energetic, with increased interests; or experiences unusually low mood, excessive worry, excessive anxiety, self-blame, low self-esteem, and even expresses pessimistic or negative thoughts, such as feeling life is meaningless or not wanting to live.
  • Behavioral Changes:Increased activity, being busy all day long; or reduced activity, feeling fatigued, prone to staring blankly, withdrawing from social contact; or performing strange actions that are difficult for others to understand.
  • Sleep Changes:Difficulty falling asleep, early awakening, easily disturbed sleep, increased or decreased need for sleep.
  • Repeatedly going for medical check-ups,being overly concerned about physical condition.
  • Repeatedly washing hands, doubting whether doors and windows are closed.
  • Misinterpreting minor discomforts as serious illnesses.

If you exhibit the above signs, first, do not be afraid; seek consultation with a psychological counselor promptly.

Currently, with increasing life pressures, many people are in a state of mental sub-health. Is your mental health okay? Let's test it! Please answer "Yes" or "No".

If someone wrongs you, do you hold a grudge for more than six months?

Do you feel angry all the way home at the person who bumped into you on the bus or subway but didn't apologize?

Do you often not feel like talking to people?

When you are doing important work, do you find others' talking distracting and annoying?

Do you spend long periods analyzing your psychological feelings and certain behaviors?

Do you often feel that others look down on you?

Are you often in a bad mood?

When arguing with others, do you often lose control of your voice volume, making it too loud or too soft?

Are you accustomed to talking to yourself?

If others don't understand you, do you get angry?

Can you not feel happy even when watching comedies or listening to jokes?

Do you often feel that someone is playing tricks on you?

Answer these questions objectively. If most answers are "No", then congratulations, you currently have healthy mental health. If most answers are "Yes", then be extra cautious, as your mental state may already have issues affecting your mental health. If you have identified problems through these questions, take steps to improve promptly.
