Gathering Intelligence in Northwest China | Leading Industry Expert Prof. Fan Ruitai Deepens Commitment to Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, Empowering a New Era in Oncology Diagnosis and Treatment
Recently, Professor Fan Ruitai—Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and Chairman of the 5th Radiation Oncology Branch of the Henan Medical Association—has officially joined the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center at Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Gansu Province) under a regular on-site residency model.
A seasoned expert bridging hands-on clinical practice and strategic discipline development, he brings advanced diagnostic/treatment philosophies and technical standards into the Center’s "family." This move presses the "accelerator" for two critical goals: driving breakthroughs in China’s heavy ion therapy technology and propelling the advancement of high-end medical care across Northwest China.

As a Professor Level 2, Chief Physician, and PhD Supervisor, Professor Fan Ruitai boasts a stellar academic and clinical resume—he serves not only as the double academic leader for both the Key Clinical Specialty of Oncology (Ministry of Health)and the Key Discipline of Oncology (Henan Province), but also steers national technical direction as a Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch, Chinese Medical Association.
From designing personalized radiotherapy plans to leading precision research on common tumors like lung and breast cancer, he bridges frontline clinical needs with a deep understanding of disciplinary development logic. This "all-round strength" allows him to precisely align with the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center’s growth goals, acting as a crucial bridge between cutting-edge expertise and local practice.

Since joining on June 3, Professor Fan Ruitai has acted as an integral member of the Center—deeply engaged in all core operations—and this regular on-site residency has now allowed him to fully integrate into this specialized team.
At the clinical frontline, he persists in conducting regular ward rounds, immersing himself in patient care alongside the Center’s medical and nursing staff: for complex cases, he provides specialized diagnostic and treatment guidance, analyzing each patient’s imaging data line by line, tracing the progression of their conditions, and collaborating with the team to dynamically adjust treatment plans. He not only prioritizes ensuring the precision of heavy ion radiotherapy but also constantly reminds the team to balance patients’ treatment tolerance. Through hands-on mentorship, he has elevated the Center’s team’s diagnostic and treatment capabilities in lockstep—while ensuring every oncology patient accesses high-quality care on par with international standards.

Professor Fan Ruitai’s integration epitomizes Wuwei Heavy Ion Center’s ongoing mission to build an international expert collaboration platform and harness global wisdom.
For years, the Center has embraced top medical talent with an open ethos, successively recruiting world-renowned specialists such as: Professor Tatsuo Kanai (Faculty of Medicine, Gunma University, Japan); Professor Hirohiko Tsujii, former President of Japan’s National Institute of Radiological Sciences (NIRS); Professor Jörg Hauffe (Hao Fei) and Professor Olga, former leaders of Germany’s Munich Proton Therapy Center (RPTC); Professor Yee-Min Jen , former Chairman of Taiwan’s Radiation Oncology Society; and Professor Wu Jiaming, a leading radiotherapy physicist at Taiwan’s Chang Gung Memorial Hospital. Through technical exchanges, it has driven alignment between Chinese standards and global norms.
Recently, the Center further strengthened its team by bringing on long-term on-site experts: Professor Yasuo Yoshioka (Department of Radiation Oncology, National Cancer Center Japan) and Professor György Kovács (George Kovacs), Director of the Center for Brachytherapy at Germany’s University of Lübeck (and educational program director at Italy’s Sacred Heart University). By embedding Chinese diagnostic and treatment protocols into clinical mentoring and technical guidance, it is laying a robust foundation for an internationally competitive oncology treatment system and a platform to export Chinese medical standards.
This philosophy—“gathering the best minds worldwide and putting them to work”—has not only paved the way for Professor Fan Ruitai’s seamless integration but also enabled him to swiftly merge his technical expertise with the Center’s existing resources. Together, they are forging a more potent collaborative force in oncology care.

Today, under the continued empowerment of leading industry figures like Professor Fan Ruitai, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is accelerating its march toward becoming a globally benchmarked "trinity" heavy ion oncology center—integrating clinical diagnosis and treatment, research-to-application translation, and talent cultivation.
Looking ahead, the Center will steadily advance two key initiatives: building a heavy ion therapy alliance and establishing 50 expert workstations. This "big family" at Wuwei Heavy Ion Center will surely continue to pool strength, make relentless breakthroughs in oncology care, and ignite fresh hope for the lives of cancer patients worldwide.
