Minimally Invasive Technology Lights the Hope of Life

—— Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch Successfully Completes Complex Uniportal Lung Cancer Radical Surgery

Leading Experts Spearhead Precision Treatment for Difficult Cases

Recently, Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch in Gansu Province invited Professor Li Jian, Chief Thoracic Surgery Expert from Peking University First Hospital, to successfully perform a uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic right lung radical resection for 52-year-old lung cancer patient Ms. Yang. After seeking treatment at multiple hospitals, Ms. Yang came to the hospital based on its reputation. After evaluation by Professor Li Jian’s team, the internationally advanced 3cm uniportal minimally invasive technique was used to completely remove the right middle lobe and systematically dissect lymph nodes. The surgery lasted only 2 hours with a blood loss of less than 50ml, demonstrating the hospital’s strong capabilities in the field of complex lung cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Advantages of Minimally Invasive Technology, Setting New Benchmarks for Rapid Recovery

Minimal Trauma: The uniportal incision is only 3cm, significantly reducing tissue damage compared to traditional open chest surgery (20cm incision).

Rapid Recovery: The patient was able to get out of bed on the first day after surgery, with a pain score of ≤2 (on the visual analog scale), and met discharge standards within 5 days.

Prognosis Assurance: The completeness of lymph node dissection meets international guidelines, significantly reducing the risk of recurrence.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration Creating a Precision Medicine Closed Loop

A multidisciplinary team (MDT) at Wuwei Cancer Hospital in Gansu Province—including departments of thoracic surgery, surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiotherapy, anesthesiology, operating room, ICU, imaging, and pathology—developed a personalized treatment plan for the patient using intraoperative rapid pathology and molecular testing technology. Professor Li Jian pointed out: "Uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery places extremely high demands on the surgeon’s operational precision and requires close coordination within the surgical team to ensure the procedure goes smoothly."

Patient’s Voice

“I never expected the surgical wound to be so small, and I could eat on my own the next day!” Ms. Yang recovered well after surgery and repeatedly expressed her gratitude to the medical team. Her family members said: “From seeking treatment in another city to the successful surgery, Wuwei Cancer Hospital in Gansu Province truly demonstrates strong technical skills and warm service.”

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public Class A Grade Three tumor specialist hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second heavy ion clinical application center in China with independent intellectual property rights, operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. In collaboration with the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system, the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system was put into clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. As of now, the center has completed photon and heavy ion treatment for over 300 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and brain glioma.

The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, bringing together top industry authorities. It features expert workstations led by 50 renowned figures, including Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Chinese Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch, serves as the president, providing strong technical support for heavy ion treatment.

Meanwhile, the hospital campus is equipped with a series of cutting-edge medical devices, including Varian's VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta's Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation positioning MRI, GE's 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian's imported iridium-192 afterloader. These hardware facilities form a solid foundation for heavy ion treatment, ensuring efficiency and precision throughout the process.

Aiming to build a comprehensive, full-lifecycle cancer treatment system, the hospital has established departments such as Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Cancer Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Center Laboratory. It offers comprehensive treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, internal medicine, and surgical oncology, as well as services such as imaging, laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cell morphology examinations.
