Strong Provincial Capital Initiative Bears Fruit: Wuwei City Supports High-Quality Development of Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center

On November 22, the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch grandly held a heavy ion opening ceremony, marking the full clinical application of China’s second carbon ion treatment system with independent intellectual property rights.

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch began receiving patients on August 15, 2024, followed by the initiation of photon therapy. Building on this, heavy ion therapy commenced on November 15. Today, Wang Junjie, Director of the Radiotherapy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch, led medical staff in holding the heavy ion opening ceremony at the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch, further advancing the development of high-tech medical technology in China.

Following the heavy ion opening ceremony, the hospital also conducted a free medical consultation event. At the event, an expert team from various disciplines, including surgical oncology and medical oncology, provided comprehensive medical consultations and diagnostic services to patients. The experts patiently and meticulously addressed patients’ questions, offering professional treatment plans.

It is reported that the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch obtained the heavy ion configuration license in July 2024; the Class II and III radiation safety license in September 2024; the heavy ion radiotherapy diagnosis and treatment license in October 2024; and the Class I radiation safety license in November 2024. Medical linear accelerator therapy began on September 25, 2024, heavy ion therapy started on November 15, 2024, and the heavy ion therapy opening ceremony was held on November 22, 2024.

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Lanzhou Branch has established an elite talent system, forming expert workstations led by 50 industry-leading authorities, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiotherapy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. This provides robust technical support for heavy ion therapy. Additionally, the branch is equipped with a series of cutting-edge medical devices, such as the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, and 3.0T simulation positioning MRI. These hardware facilities lay a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring efficiency and precision in the treatment process.

The holding of this heavy ion therapy opening ceremony marks a new chapter in the integrated operation of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center and the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. It is a significant measure for Gansu Province to develop the heavy ion industry and an active effort by Wuwei City to fully implement the strong provincial capital strategy. This initiative will undoubtedly lay a solid foundation for Gansu’s heavy ion medical and related industries, propel China’s heavy ion industry to new heights, and inject strong momentum into the development of regional new quality productivity.
