Multidisciplinary Collaboration Safeguards Success: Oral Treatment for a 90-Year-Old Patient Overcomes Risks

Introduction: The Department of Stomatology and the Department of Cardiology at Wuwei Tumor Hospital of Gansu Province joined forces through a multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) model to successfully perform oral treatment for a 90-year-old patient with multiple underlying medical conditions. This achievement fully demonstrates our hospital’s comprehensive capabilities in managing complex cases and its strong sense of responsibility.

Recently, the Department of Stomatology at Wuwei Tumor Hospital admitted a 90-year-old patient suffering from severe toothache, accompanied by hypertension, cardiac insufficiency, and congestive heart failure. The treatment posed extremely high difficulty and risk. Faced with this complex condition, the stomatology and cardiology teams responded swiftly and collaboratively. Through rigorous preoperative evaluation, precise surgical procedures, and comprehensive monitoring measures, they successfully alleviated the patient’s pain, earning high praise from the patient and their family.

Precise Evaluation: Multidisciplinary Collaboration Ensures Safety

On September 4, 2025, the patient, who had failed to receive effective treatment for toothache at another hospital, was referred to our hospital. Attaching great importance to the patient’s advanced age and overall physical condition, Director Han Dong and his team from the Department of Stomatology immediately initiated the MDT model. Director Gao Shengyun and his team from the Department of Cardiology responded promptly, conducting systematic cardiac function evaluations and providing symptomatic and supportive treatment.

On the morning of September 8, Director Han Dong and Director Gao Shengyun re-evaluated the patient’s oral and systemic status, ultimately formulating an individualized treatment plan: extracting tooth 38 (a wisdom tooth) and performing root canal treatment for pulpitis in tooth 37. This plan aimed to “treat dental diseases while ensuring safety.” After full communication with the family and obtaining their consent, the treatment proceeded smoothly. The entire process, characterized by accurate judgment and orderly collaboration, provided a solid guarantee for surgical safety and won profound trust from the family.

During the procedure, continuous ECG monitoring and oxygen support were provided to ensure the patient’s vital signs remained stable. With his “swift, accurate, and steady” professional skills, Director Han Dong completed the oral treatment rapidly, significantly shortening the operation time and minimizing the patient’s pain and stress response. Postoperatively, the patient and their family highly praised Director Han’s exceptional expertise.

Dedicated Care: Wholehearted Commitment Embodies Medical Warmth

Following the tooth extraction, medical staff from the Department of Stomatology closely monitored the patient. After confirming no active bleeding and stable vital signs, they thoroughly explained postoperative precautions to the patient and their family. Director Han Dong specially arranged for medical staff to escort the patient back to the cardiology ward and conducted a detailed handover with the responsible nurse and attending physician, ensuring continuity of subsequent care. Currently, the patient is recovering well, and the family is deeply satisfied with the treatment outcomes.
