Expert Team from the Radiotherapy Department of Gansu Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center Visits Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center for Guidance and Exchange
On September 12, an expert team from the Radiotherapy Department of Gansu Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center visited the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center to conduct guidance and exchange activities.

At the beginning of the meeting, the expert team, accompanied by relevant responsible personnel of the center, conducted a tour to gain a detailed understanding of the facility construction and clinical operations of the Heavy Ion Center. Subsequently, Vice President Li Xiaojun provided a comprehensive introduction to the construction process, current clinical operations, and future development plans of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center.

During the expert guidance session, Wei Shihong, Zhang Chunlin, and Dong Fang, chief physicians from the Radiotherapy Department of Gansu Hospital Affiliated to Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center, offered valuable opinions and suggestions on the clinical application of radiotherapy technology, quality control, and multidisciplinary collaboration. The two parties engaged in in-depth discussions on the cutting-edge advancements in heavy ion radiotherapy technology, clinical challenges, and potential directions for scientific research collaboration.
This exchange further strengthened communication and cooperation between the two medical institutions in the field of tumor radiotherapy, playing a significant role in promoting the technical level and service capabilities of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. All participants expressed their commitment to using this guidance and exchange as an opportunity to deepen cooperation in the future and jointly contribute to the cause of cancer prevention and treatment in the western region.

This exchange not only facilitated the mutual learning of professional expertise and management experience between the two institutions but also laid a solid foundation for further advancing the development of tumor radiotherapy in the northwestern region.

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center
Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public Class A Grade Three tumor specialist hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second heavy ion clinical application center in China with independent intellectual property rights, operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. In collaboration with the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system, the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system was put into clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. As of now, the center has completed photon and heavy ion treatment for over 300 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and brain glioma.
The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, bringing together top industry authorities. It features expert workstations led by 50 renowned figures, including Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Chinese Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch, serves as the president, providing strong technical support for heavy ion treatment.
Meanwhile, the hospital campus is equipped with a series of cutting-edge medical devices, including Varian's VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta's Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation positioning MRI, GE's 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian's imported iridium-192 afterloader. These hardware facilities form a solid foundation for heavy ion treatment, ensuring efficiency and precision throughout the process.
Aiming to build a comprehensive, full-lifecycle cancer treatment system, the hospital has established departments such as Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Cancer Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Center Laboratory. It offers comprehensive treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, internal medicine, and surgical oncology, as well as services such as imaging, laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cell morphology examinations.
