Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital Successfully Hosts Balint Psychological Technique Training, Promoting Comprehensive Enhancement of Heavy Ion Treatment Services through Humanistic Care
To further strengthen the construction of the psycho-somatic rehabilitation system and improve medical staff's communication skills and humanistic care capabilities, our hospital specially invited Professor Zhang Guiqing—an internationally renowned domestic psychology expert, Director of the Rehabilitation Psychology Department at Shihezi University (Xinjiang), and Deputy Director of the Psycho-Somatic Rehabilitation Branch of the Chinese Rehabilitation Medicine Association—to conduct a specialized training session on "Balint Group" psychotherapeutic techniques on September 6.

The training, themed "Immersing the Body to Reach the Heart: Holistic Healing of Body and Mind," comprised two main segments: theoretical instruction and hands-on experiential practice. Professor Zhang Guiqing systematically elaborated on the core concepts and application pathways of Balint work. Psychologist Shang Ying, serving as the teaching assistant, supported the conduct of group experiential exercises, guiding medical staff to master key skills in psychological communication and emotional support within simulated real-world scenarios. This effort has injected new momentum into further enhancing the quality of patient services.

This training is not only a key component of our hospital's efforts to advance the development of a humanistic healthcare institution but also a critical initiative to comprehensively elevate the overall service capacity of the Heavy Ion Treatment Center. As a leading oncology specialty hospital in China that pioneered the introduction of heavy ion radiotherapy technology, our hospital has long upheld the treatment philosophy of "valuing both technological excellence and humanistic care." While delivering globally leading heavy ion treatment techniques, we place equal emphasis on advancing two parallel priorities: the psychological rehabilitation of patients and the professional growth of our medical staff.

In the future, our hospital will continue to advance the development path integrating high-level technology with humanistic services. We will consistently strengthen psychological support and humanistic care across the entire spectrum of heavy ion treatment management, delivering a more comprehensive, warm, and precise medical experience to patients. These efforts aim to help establish a new benchmark for oncological rehabilitation rooted in the principle of "holistic body-mind treatment."
Snapshots of the Visit
Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center
Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public Grade A Tertiary oncology specialty hospital. Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, operated by Gansu Wuwei Oncology Hospital, is the second heavy ion clinical application center in China with independent intellectual property rights. Alongside the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system, the second Chinese heavy ion oncology treatment system was put into clinical operation at Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has completed over 290 photon and heavy ion treatments for patients, covering conditions such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.
Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an outstanding talent system with a gathering of elites, building an expert workstation led by 50 top industry authorities, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, President of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the President of the center, providing strong technical support for heavy ion treatment.
Meanwhile, the campus is equipped with a series of state-of-the-art medical devices, including Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerators, Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerators, 3.0T simulation positioning MRI systems, GE 256-slice high-end CT scanners, and Varian imported iridium-192 afterloaders. These hardware facilities have laid a solid foundation for heavy ion treatment, ensuring the efficiency and precision of the therapeutic process.
Aiming to build a comprehensive, full-life-cycle oncology treatment system, the hospital has established departments such as the Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Medical Oncology/Hematology, Department of Surgical Oncology, Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology Rehabilitation, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Department of Imaging, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Department of Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Central Laboratory.
