On September 7, the "Gansu Province Million Employees Skill Competition—Gansu Province Pathology Diagnostic Image Recognition Contest," jointly organized by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission and the Provincial Trade Union Council, and co-hosted by institutions including the Gansu Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center and the Provincial Pathology Medical Quality Control Center, concluded successfully. Dr. Tian Guoqing, Associate Chief Physician from the Department of Pathology at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, won the "First Prize" in the competition. As one of the first-category competitions in the healthcare system of the 2025 Gansu Province Million Employees Labor and Skills Competition, this Pathology Diagnostic Image Recognition Contest was held with the core objective of "strengthening the construction of the provincial pathology talent team and promoting the standardized development of pathology diagnosis." The contest was conducted in two stages: preliminary and final rounds. The preliminary round was uniformly organized and selected by municipal-level health commissions across various cities and prefectures. Our hospital's Associate Chief Physician Tian Guoqing, Attending Physician Li Haiying, and Resident Physician Li Shuangyan, after being selected and recommended by the Wuwei Municipal Health Commission, successfully advanced to the provincial finals. Standing out among 150 participants, they ultimately won the individual first prize, individual second prize, and group third prize, respectively.

The finals were held from September 5 to 7. The competition focused on core competencies in pathological diagnosis, requiring participating physicians to complete image recognition and slide interpretation within 70 minutes, accurately writing diagnostic results, diagnostic basis, and reasoning—comprehensively assessing participants’ professional expertise in pathological diagnosis and clinical thinking skills. This competition not only demonstrated our hospital’s technical proficiency in pathological diagnosis but also effectively enhanced the diagnostic skills and competition experience of young physicians. Taking this event as an opportunity, our hospital’s pathology department will further strengthen the construction of a professional pathology talent team, improve the standardization level of pathological diagnosis, and continuously strive to ensure medical quality and patient health.

Introduction to Pathology

The Department of Pathology at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital originated from the establishment of the Wuwei Tumor Prevention and Treatment Research Institute in 1978. After over four decades of relentless efforts and hard work by generations of pathologists, it has developed into a large-scale, technologically strong pathology specialty department in the Hexi region with considerable influence in Gansu Province. Currently, the department has 18 professional technical staff, including 3 with senior titles and 4 with intermediate titles. Eight hold master's degrees, placing the department at the forefront in terms of highly educated personnel among municipal hospitals in the province. Among them, there are 6 diagnostic physicians—4 with master's degrees and 2 with bachelor's degrees—all of whom have received professional training in major tertiary Grade A hospitals. The 12 technical staff include 4 with master's degrees and 8 with bachelor's degrees, all trained in provincial-level hospitals.

The department now comprises a Pathology Diagnosis Center (including diagnosis room, specimen sampling room, specimen storage room, cytology room, sectioning room, technical room, immunohistochemistry room, molecular pathology room, tissue bank, archives room, director’s office, group study room, etc.) and a Molecular Pathology Center.

The Molecular Pathology Diagnosis Center is located in the Biochip Center Laboratory (Wuwei Municipal Nucleic Acid Testing Base) at the Heavy Ion Hospital Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, covering an area of approximately 1,000 square meters. Its preparation began in 2015, and it was put into clinical application in March 2016. In October 2017, it was officially designated as the Gansu Sub-center of the Beijing National Engineering Research Center for Biochips. On June 14, 2019, the PCR laboratory of the sub-center passed the inspection and assessment by the expert team of the Gansu Provincial Clinical Laboratory Center, obtaining the Technical Acceptance Certificate for Clinical Gene Amplification Testing Laboratories, meeting the conditions and requirements for conducting various clinical gene amplification testing projects. In December 2020, it took charge of the construction of the Wuwei Municipal Nucleic Acid Testing Base, which passed the inspection and assessment by the expert team of the Gansu Provincial Clinical Laboratory Center on January 23, 2021.

The department's services cover areas including histopathology, cytopathology, special staining and immunohistochemistry, molecular pathology, and molecular genetics. It conducts pathological examinations on various surgical resection specimens, endoscopic biopsy tissues, and puncture biopsy tissues, as well as molecular pathology testing projects such as FISH, PCR, first-generation sequencing, and second-generation sequencing. Currently, the annual average external examination volume exceeds 17,000 cases, with over 1,000 intraoperative rapid frozen section examinations, 6,000 cytology cases, and 6,000 molecular pathology cases.
