Expert Q&A | Press Inquiry

Since its official launch on March 26, 2020, the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has successfully operated both the first and second Chinese heavy ion tumor therapy systems through years of construction and operational practice. The center has continuously achieved breakthroughs in technological innovation, setting multiple "world-first" records:

It is the only hospital globally operating two heavy ion therapy systems, forming a powerful dual-center collaborative framework.

It leads the world in the number of single-fraction treatments completed within one day.

It pioneered precision heavy ion therapy under ventilator control, bladder cancer treatment under precise bladder capacity management, and single-session heavy ion therapy with surgically implanted spacers between organs and tumors.

It developed China’s first 360° rotating and adjustable ion therapy chair.

It performed the world’s first cases of heavy ion therapy for cardiac tumors.

It implemented the first comprehensive whole-life-cycle physical and mental health management combined with heavy ion therapy.

These breakthroughs not only fill multiple international gaps but also transform China’s heavy ion therapy from a "follower" to a "leader."

wuwei

Moreover, the hospital has long engaged renowned experts from Japan, Germany, Taiwan (China), and other regions, laying a solid foundation for building an internationally competitive cancer treatment system through clinical mentoring and technical guidance. Recently, it further invited Professor Yasuo Yoshioka from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Japanese Cancer Research Center and Professor György Kovács, Director of the Lübeck Brachytherapy Center (Germany) and Education Program Director at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy), to work long-term at the hospital.

wuwei

From 7 treatable diseases during the 2018 clinical trial phase to over 50 types of tumors today, and from an annual treatment capacity of 200 cases to nearly 1,000 cases with an average growth rate of 17.5%, these advancements reflect the comprehensive progress of China’s high-end medical services and technical precision. To date, the hospital has successfully brought hope to over 2,100 cancer patients from all provinces of China, including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, as well as from countries such as Belgium, Australia, South Korea, and Canada.

wuwei

To effectively address medical costs and provide financial support for cancer prevention and treatment, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital partnered with China Life Insurance and other insurers to launch the "One Million Medical + Heavy Ion Green Channel" project. Those who purchase the insurance can receive up to ¥5.55 million (¥4.05 million for comprehensive medical insurance + ¥1.5 million for heavy ion medical insurance) coverage for heavy ion and other comprehensive treatments, with the insurer providing one-stop medical expense reimbursement. This project has already benefited a significant number of patients undergoing heavy ion and comprehensive therapies.

wuwei

"China's Heavy Ion Therapy: A New Hope for Life." With the launch of this promotion event, heavy ion therapy—an advanced cancer treatment technology of the 21st century—will further reach the public in Qinghai and surrounding regions. This not only marks a milestone in the deep integration of China’s cutting-edge medical technology with public health protection but also signifies a leap forward in the transition from technological breakthrough to widespread, accessible cancer treatment in China.
