Recently, another significant step forward has been made in the high-quality development of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center with the new addition of an international expert Professor Yasuo Yoshioka. His joining our institute injects strong momentum into elevating the level of heavy ion diagnosis and treatment.

As an international expert in brachytherapy and a leading authority in radiation oncology, Professor Yasuo Yoshioka specializes primarily in the radiotherapy of prostate cancer, including high-dose-rate (HDR) and low-dose-rate (LDR) brachytherapy, intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). As a globally recognized authority in the field of high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, he is the pioneer of the world's first HDR monotherapy for prostate cancer. His groundbreaking clinical experience has set a milestone in the advancement of this field.

Professor Yasuo Yoshioka conducts rounds and consultations across various radiotherapy departments, providing internationally benchmarked personalized treatment plans tailored to each patient’s condition. He also engages in in-depth discussions on the application of radiotherapy technologies and the optimization of clinical workflows. While comprehensively advancing the development of heavy ion-related disciplines, he is also driving the international alignment of the hospital’s radiotherapy and heavy ion treatment technologies.

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public tertiary Class A specialized cancer hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second clinical application center for heavy ion therapy with Chinese independent intellectual property rights operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. Together with China's first heavy ion therapy system, China's second heavy ion tumor therapy system was put into clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has completed photon and heavy ion treatments for over 280 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.  

The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite-driven talent system, forming an expert workstation led by 50 top authorities in the field, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the center’s president, providing strong technical support for heavy ion therapy.  

Additionally, the facility is equipped with a range of cutting-edge medical devices, including the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation and positioning MRI, GE 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian Ir-192 imported afterloader. These advanced hardware facilities lay a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring efficient and precise treatment processes.  

Aiming to establish a comprehensive, full-lifecycle tumor treatment system, the hospital operates departments such as the Department of Radiotherapy, Department of Oncology/Hematology, Department of Surgical Oncology, Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Tumor Rehabilitation, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Department of Imaging, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Department of Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Central Laboratory. It provides comprehensive treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, medical and surgical therapies, as well as imaging, medical laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cytology examinations.
