Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Thoracic Surgery Department Achieves Outstanding Results in "2025 Gansu Provincial Chest Trauma Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity Enhancement & Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Skills Competition"
August 8-10, 2025 – Hosted by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission and organized by the Gansu Provincial Medical Quality Control Center for Thoracic Surgery and the Thoracic Surgery Department of the First Hospital of Lanzhou University, the "Gansu Provincial Chest Trauma Diagnosis and Treatment Capacity Enhancement & Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Skills Competition" was held at the Lanzhou University Skills Training Center. Following the competition, the "2025 'Belt and Road' Thoracic Surgery Medical Quality Control Series Tour" academic lecture was conducted. These events aimed to further elevate the diagnosis and treatment capabilities of thoracic surgery in our province, standardize medical practices, accelerate the standardization process of thoracic surgery care, and enhance the service capacity and level of primary-level thoracic surgery departments. This ensures medical quality and safety while promoting the sustainable development of thoracic surgery in Gansu.

The competition comprised four segments: endoscopic skills practice, robotic operation, video presentation, and theoretical Q&A. A total of 18 thoracic surgery teams from 14 prefectures and cities across the province engaged in fierce competition. The team from Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, led by Director Zhang Yingguo, Head of the Wuwei Municipal Medical Quality Control Center for Thoracic Surgery, participated in the finals. After intense competition, Dr. Zhang Yulong, Attending Physician from our hospital's Thoracic Surgery Department, won the Individual Second Prize for his solid theoretical foundation and exceptional operational skills. Simultaneously, our team secured the Group Second Prize and the Outstanding Organization Award.

In recent years, as the host institution of the Wuwei Municipal Medical Quality Control Center for Thoracic Surgery, our hospital has successfully organized four Wuwei Municipal Thoracic Surgery Medical Quality Control and Skills Selection Competitions. Several young physicians from our department have participated as contestants in provincial skills competitions, achieving excellent results multiple times. Through these competitions, the rapid growth of our young thoracic surgeons and nursing staff in practical settings has been fully demonstrated. Moreover, they showcase our department's formidable medical team, possessing exquisite technical skills and robust medical service capabilities.

Competition drives progress; through contests, we identify gaps, and knowing our gaps allows us to address weaknesses. Skills competitions greatly stimulate young physicians' professional ambition and pride in their specialty. A strong team is the cornerstone of a discipline's continuous development, while the rise of young physicians is the direct driving force behind its progress. Only with superb skills and professional knowledge can we ensure medical quality and safety and better serve the physical and mental health of the public.
