On June 28, Wuwei Heavy Ion Center—China’s first clinical application base for heavy ion therapy systems—marked the fifth anniversary of its opening. Meanwhile, the "Academic Symposium on Cutting-Edge Particle Therapy Technologies for Cancer: Celebrating the Fifth Anniversary of Wuwei Heavy Ion Center" was held in Wuwei on the same day.

It is reported that since the center began clinical operations in March 2020, it has provided treatment to over 2,000 cancer patients, covering more than 50 disease types including lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.

Over the past five years, Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has successfully developed globally pioneering technologies such as carbon ion radiotherapy under respiratory suppression using high-frequency oscillatory ventilation and precision bladder volume control technology for bladder cancer treatment. These innovations have solidified its position as a key player in the international heavy ion therapy field.

The symposium aimed to summarize the center’s experiences and achievements over the past five years, deepen international exchanges and cooperation, and advance technological innovation. Academician Zhan Wenlong, Academician Xia Jiawen, Academician Zhao Hongwei, Academician Ma Jun, and other domestic experts, along with international scholars including Hiroyuki Tsujii (former President of Japan’s QST [Quantum Science and Technology Research Organization]), delivered keynote speeches. The expert team from Wuwei Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital shared their latest achievements in clinical practice, physical technology, and R&D innovation. Participating experts discussed cutting-edge particle therapy technologies for cancer and future directions.
