Breakthrough in Wuwei's Heavy Ion Therapy Project
On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, Wuwei’s heavy ion clinical application project has reached three significant milestones:
- The upgraded Treatment Cabins No. 3 and No. 4 at the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center have been fully put into operation.
- The total number of patients treated at the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has exceeded 1,500.
- The Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has officially begun admitting patients.
Over 1,500 patients treated at Wuwei Heavy Ion Center
Wuwei Heavy Ion Center's Treatment Cabins No. 3 and No. 4, after upgrade and replacement, have been fully put into operation. This marks a new breakthrough in the clinical application of heavy ion therapy in Wuwei.
This project has introduced advanced vertical pencil-beam scanning and 45-degree uniform scanning technologies. These upgrades not only meet the clinical demands of multi-angle irradiation but also elevate treatment precision to the millimeter level.
In addition, the facility is equipped with Germany's top-tier KUKA six-axis robotic treatment couch and CBCT-based patient positioning verification technology. This has reduced positioning errors to less than 0.5mm, shortened positioning time to 5 minutes, optimized beam utilization, and increased the daily patient treatment capacity.
Leapfrog improvements have been achieved in multiple aspects, including pencil-beam scanning precision, positioning accuracy, treatment couch performance, and treatment speed. These technological innovations not only demonstrate Wuwei's leading position in the field of medical technology but also reflect a high level of responsibility for patients' lives and health.

Treatment Cabin No. 4 of Wuwei Heavy Ion Center
As of now, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has successfully treated over 1,500 patients, covering more than 50 disease types including lung cancer, liver cancer, and pancreatic cancer. Patients have come from across China—including Beijing, Shanghai, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau—as well as international regions such as Belgium and Australia.
This achievement reflects the dedication and selfless efforts of the medical team, as well as the trust and recognition patients have placed in heavy ion therapy technology.
Simultaneously, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has pioneered multiple globally innovative technologies and established China’s first heavy ion therapy quality management system. The center has authored six authoritative monographs, including Standardized Operational Procedures for Carbon Ion Radiotherapy, developed clinical treatment protocols for over 50 disease types, and created a comprehensive, full-life-cycle health management model—delivering holistic, patient-centered medical services.
Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital
The Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has officially commenced patient admissions. This milestone marks a significant step in Wuwei's resolute implementation of the "Strengthening Provincial Capital" initiative, advancing integrated heavy ion therapy operations across Gansu Province and ushering in a new era for oncology treatment in the region.
