China’s Heavy Ion Therapy Goes Global: Debut at World’s Largest Medical Expo
— Wuwei Heavy Ion Treatment Center Showcases at MEDICA, Düsseldorf, the Globe’s Premier Hospital & Medical Equipment Exhibition
The participation of Wuwei Heavy Ion Center in this exhibition not only showcased its advanced heavy ion therapy technology and equipment, but also shared remarkable achievements in cancer treatment in recent years, drawing significant attention from visitors.
At the exhibition, Wuwei Heavy Ion Center staff detailed its operational progress. Since clinical deployment, the center has successfully treated nearly 1,600 patients from all Chinese provinces (including Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau) and countries like Belgium and Australia, with outstanding efficacy and patient tolerance.
The center pioneered global-first technologies including: High-frequency oscillatory respiratory-gated precision heavy ion therapy; Bladder volume-controlled cancer treatment; Surgical spacer-insertion single-session heavy ion therapy; Motion-managed "Heavy Ion Surgery" (single-session completion).
It published six monographs like Standard Operating Procedures for Carbon Ion Radiotherapy and established a holistic "Biological-Psychological-Social" medical model, integrating TCM with heavy ion therapy to create a distinctive Chinese oncology rehabilitation framework.
In September 2024, after 4.5 years of clinical use, Wuwei’s heavy ion system upgraded with robotic-arm treatment couches in Chambers 3-4, cutting positioning time from 30 to 15 minutes and doubling monthly capacity to 100 patients. By November, Lanzhou’s 4 chambers became operational, enabling Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to treat 200 patients monthly across 8 chambers, delivering more efficient care.
