National 2025 Rural GI Cancer Screening Launched in Wuwei

Kickoff Meeting for 2025 National Major Public Health Project - Rural Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Early Diagnosis and Treatment Program Successfully Held in Kangning Town, Liangzhou District, Wuwei City

Gansu Province is a igh-risk region  for cancer, especially esophageal and gastric cancers are the particularly prevalent. According to statistics, the incidence and mortality rates of gastric cancer in our province rank first in the country. Gastric cancer has become a regionally significant disease that restricts the socio-economic development of our province and seriously threatens the health of the people. Wuwei City was designated as a screening point for early diagnosis and treatment of gastric cancer under the central fiscal transfer payment project in 2009, as a screening point for early diagnosis and treatment of esophageal/gastroesophageal junction cancer in 2010, and as a screening point for early diagnosis and treatment of upper gastrointestinal cancer in 2012. As the implementing unit of the project, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has carried out project screening for 15 years. It has not only trained a skilled local technical teamfor our city but also effectively promoted the construction of the comprehensive prevention and control system for upper gastrointestinal cancer in our city.

On the morning of May 19, 2025, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital held the launch meeting for the 2025 Rural Upper Gastrointestinal Cancer Early Diagnosis and Treatment Project in Kangning Town at the conference room on the third floor of the Kangning Town Government in Liangzhou District, Wuwei City. Nie Peng, the deputy director of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, Lu Linzhi, the director of the Digestive Center, and the project staff from the Public Health Department, Tao Runran, the secretary of the Party Committee of Kangning Town, Liangzhou District, Xu Wei, the deputy mayor of Kangning Town, the secretaries and directors of the village committees in each village, the heads of the village clinics, and the health specialists and other relevant personnel attended the launch meeting.

At the launch meeting, Secretary Tao Runan fully affirmed the significance of the rural upper gastrointestinal cancer early screening and treatment program as a vital initiative benefiting the people. He urged village committee officials in Kangning Town to enhance their understanding, organize meticulously, and ensure high-quality completion of the project. Additionally, he called on village doctors to actively promote this public-benefit screening program and further improve their service capabilities in addressing the needs of the community.

Nie Peng, the deputy director of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, pointed out that the project leadership team must strictly adhere to the technical operation specifications of the project to ensure the quality of the project work. He required the project leadership team to carefully sort out the work processes, improve the satisfaction of the eligible population participating in the project, and guarantee medical safety. A full-chain project service should be provided to the public to ensure early detection, early diagnosis, and early treatment.

Lu Linzhi, the head of the technical group for the early diagnosis and treatment project of upper gastrointestinal cancer in rural areas and the director of the Digestive Center of Wuwei Cancer Hospital, conducted project training for the participants. Director Lu Linzhi gave explanations from three aspects: the project background, the significance of the project work, and how to carry out the project work.

As a core component of the national major public health service initiative for chronic disease prevention and control, the early diagnosis and treatment project for upper gastrointestinal cancer in rural areas shoulders the critical mission of safeguarding the lives and health of the people, promoting the equitable development of public health services, and comprehensively strengthening the primary healthcare service capacity. It is truly a livelihood project that benefits the general public. Our hospital will further standardizing and institutionalizing of gastrointestinal cancer screening. We are committed to moving the cancer treatment gateway forward, comprehensively enhancing the level of early diagnosis and treatment, and striving to achieve the goal of "a simultaneous decline in the incidence and mortality rates of gastrointestinal cancer, and a concurrent increase in the early diagnosis and treatment rate and survival rate" at an earlier date. We will dedicate all necessary resources protect the health of the people in our city.
