Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital Teams Visit Minqin County for Free Clinics and Rural Health Outreach

To promote the distribution of high‑quality medical resources to the grassroots level, address the practical difficulties of "long distances and limited access to care" faced by rural residents, and further the Healthy China strategy, our hospital's Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Department (flagship department) and Evergreen Health Management Center organized a core medical and nursing team to carry out a public‑service initiative titled "Flagship Department Outreach: Free Clinics and Ward Rounds Bring Care to the Community" on July 22 and 23 at Caqi Town Health Center and Chongxing Town Health Center in Minqin County.

At the event, the expert team provided free consultations, physical examinations, traditional Chinese medicine syndrome differentiation, medication guidance, and health education to local residents. They focused on common issues such as cancer rehabilitation, gastrointestinal disorders, rheumatic and bone diseases, and chronic disease management, addressing questions patiently and providing thorough diagnosis and treatment — bringing professional and compassionate health services directly to the community.

Following the clinic, the expert team conducted teaching ward rounds, case discussions, and treatment plan optimization in the inpatient wards, engaging in face‑to‑face exchanges and hands‑on mentoring with primary‑care medical staff. They shared their experience in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, helping to strengthen the service capacity and standardized diagnostic and treatment capabilities of grassroots medical institutions.

This initiative represents a concrete action by the hospital's flagship department to demonstrate leadership and a practical embodiment of the hospital's commitment to serving public health. Going forward, the Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Department of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will continue to carry out community‑based free clinics, technical assistance, and talent development efforts, ensuring that high‑quality integrated medical services reach more grassroots communities.

Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Department / Traditional Chinese Medicine Oncology Specialty

The Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a key specialty of traditional Chinese medicine in Wuwei and a designated TCM advantage specialty. Its TCM Oncology subspecialty is the largest of its kind in Wuwei. The department operates 5 TCM‑specialized outpatient clinics and 1 inpatient ward.

The department has a team of 28 healthcare professionals:

• Medical staff: 1 Chief Physician, 3 Associate Chief Physicians, 3 Attending Physicians, 1 Resident Physician, 3 with Master's degrees, 1 Wuwei City Famous TCM Practitioner, and 8 direct disciples of Professor Pei Zhengxue — a renowned national TCM expert and prominent figure in integrated Chinese‑Western medicine.
• Nursing staff: 12 nurses.

The department has led 3 provincial‑level and 15 municipal‑level research projects, and has received 2 Second‑Prizes and 2 Third‑Prizes in the Gansu Huangfu Mi TCM Science and Technology Awards, 4 Second‑Prizes in Wuwei Science and Technology Progress Awards, 2 medical utility patents, 2 published monographs, and over 80 published medical papers.

Clinical Scope

The department focuses on integrated Chinese‑Western medicine treatment for:

• Tumors and cancers
• Gastrointestinal (spleen‑stomach) disorders
• Rheumatic and immune diseases
• Skin diseases
• Neck, shoulder, lower back, and leg pain

Treatment Philosophy and Approach

Guided by the principle of integrated Chinese‑Western medicine, the department applies a comprehensive "whole‑life‑cycle rehabilitation management" system for cancer patients. Throughout the full course of cancer treatment — before and after surgery, during heavy ion therapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy — TCM is used to enhance efficacy and reduce toxicity. The goal is to maximize patients' quality of life, extend survival, and reduce the risk of recurrence and metastasis.

TCM Treatment Modalities

The department offers a wide range of TCM therapies, including:

• Acupuncture and electro‑acupuncture
• Wax therapy, moxibustion, and partitioned moxibustion
• Chinese herbal fumigation and washing
• Cupping and scraping (gua sha)
• High‑frequency hyperthermia
• Cervical and lumbar traction
• Tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage)
• Acupoint catgut embedding, acupoint application, and acupoint injection
• Ear tip bloodletting and auricular acupressure
• Trigger point injections, foot baths, and bloodletting therapy
• Sanfu (summer) and Sanjiu (winter) herbal patch therapy
