Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital Collaborates with "Mother River" Cancer Prevention Public Welfare Project to Boost Standardized Gynecological Oncology Treatment in Western China
Dean Wang Junjie Leads the Launch Meeting in Xining and the Construction of a Regional Collaboration Platform
On August 8, the launch meeting of the "Mother's River · Cancer Prevention and Public Welfare Project" Xining Station and the Qinghai Provincial Standardized Training Conference on Gynecological Oncology, hosted by the Bethune Public Welfare Foundation and organized by Qinghai Red Cross Hospital, was grandly held in Xining, Qinghai. As a core technical support unit and regional collaboration hub, Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital, led by Dean Professor Wang Junjie, participated in the joint construction of the project, helping to advance the construction of a precision cancer prevention and treatment network in western China to a new stage.

Lead the top-level design of the project
Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiotherapy Committee of the Bethune Public Welfare Foundation, Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Third Hospital, and President of Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital, delivered a speech at the launch ceremony. He emphasized that this project will establish an "Expert Consultation Center" to extend its reach across Northwest China, creating a fast-track for technical support that extends down to the grassroots medical system. At the event, President Wang Junjie presented plaques designating Qinghai Red Cross Hospital and other institutions as "Project Partner Hospitals." He also led the awarding ceremony for member units of the "Northwest Gynecological Oncology and Brachytherapy Collaboration Group," further strengthening the regional technical alliance.

Co-construction of an expert consultation center
During the highly anticipated "Unveiling Ceremony of the Expert Consultation Center", President Wang Junjie of Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital and Vice President A'Jiancuo of Qinghai Red Cross Hospital jointly launched the regional diagnostic platform as representatives. The Center will leverage Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital's cutting-edge radiotherapy technology resources and multidisciplinary expert team to provide remote consultations, complex case discussions, and personalized treatment planning for primary hospitals in Qinghai. This initiative will effectively address the challenges faced by patients in Western China who previously had to seek medical care across provinces.

Leading the frontier development of cancer treatment
Professor Li Sha from the 904th Hospital of the Joint Logistics Support Force delivered a special report titled Heavy Ion Therapy for Tumors, systematically elaborating on the precise targeting advantages and side-effect control efficacy of carbon ion beams in gynecological oncology treatment. The presentation sparked in-depth discussions among experts from institutions including the Qinghai Provincial Cancer Hospital and the Affiliated Hospital of Qinghai University. The report provided a technical benchmark for conducting advanced tumor radiotherapy in high-altitude regions.

Implement the Healthy China Strategy
The "Mother's River" project continues to promote the extension of high-quality medical resources to grassroots levels through a dual-track model of "technical assistance + public screening," enabling more patients to access high-level, high-quality medical services close to home. As a national benchmark for particle therapy technology, Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital will continuously provide core resources including talent training, quality control standards, and research collaboration to support the public welfare goals of "reducing tumor mortality rates in western China and breaking the chain of poverty caused by illness."

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center
Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public tertiary Class A specialized oncology hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, the second heavy ion clinical application center with independent Chinese intellectual property rights operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, commenced clinical operation on November 15, 2024, alongside the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system—joining the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system. To date, the center has treated over 250 patients using photon and heavy ion therapies, covering conditions such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.
The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, anchored by an expert workstation led by 50 top industry authorities, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the center’s president, providing robust technical support for heavy ion therapy.
Additionally, the facility is equipped with a suite of cutting-edge medical devices, including the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation and positioning MRI, GE 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian iridium-192 imported afterloader. These advanced hardware systems form a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring both efficiency and precision in treatment delivery.
Aiming to establish a comprehensive, full-life-cycle oncology treatment system, the hospital operates specialized departments such as Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Central Laboratory. It provides integrated treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, medical and surgical oncology, as well as diagnostic services such as imaging, laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cytology examinations.
