Nurturing Excellence with Compassion, Cultivating New Horizons with Vitality

—ICU Department Achieves Outstanding Results in Provincial Competitions Again

On April 25, the National Pain and Sedation Competition Gansu Provincial Finals were held in Tianshui. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital stood out among 15 teams province-wide, securing second place. For three consecutive years, the department has achieved championship status first place in the Jinchang-Wuwei regional qualifiers to advance to the provincial finals and ranked among the top three. Earlier, on March 23, the department also earned third place (first among prefecture-level hospitals) in the Provincial Critical Care Clinical Teaching Rounds Competition.

Stage Brilliance: Professionalism Meets Case Integration

Dr. Yang Wenyuan and Nurse Li Wenyu from the ICU delivered a presentation titled Harmony in Light, Journey with Light: Pain and Sedation Narrative in ECMO-Assisted Massive Pulmonary Embolism Treatment. Through scenario-based storytelling, they reconstructed the full treatment process. By integrating analgesia, sedation, hemodynamic monitoring, and bedside ultrasound evaluation under ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), the team achieved personalized treatment, elevating the case report to a symphony of "life guardianship."

Discipline Development: A Decade of Dedication, Building Life-Saving Foundations

As the ultimate safeguard in critical care, the hospital has comprehensively supported the ICU’s development. The department now leads the Wuwei region in ICU bed capacity, medical talent cultivation, technology innovation, and research. The hospital has enlisted distinguished experts, including Dr. Peng Zhiyong, Chief Scientist of the National 973 Program and Director of Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University, and Dr. Liu Dong from the PLA Joint Logistics Support Force 940 Hospital, to provide academic guidance and clinical consultations. Additionally, the hospital introduced human-centric initiatives:

• Apartment-style caregiver housing to replace traditional ICU waiting corridors.

• Video visitation systems enabling real-time updates for family members in remote areas, embodying medical warmth.
