On March 29, the Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center) successfully hosted the inauguration of its National-Renowned Expert Workstation, a large-scale free clinic with provincial experts, and the signing ceremony for alliance partnership in Jincheng Lanzhou. This event marked an innovative practice to implement China’s hierarchical medical system, aiming to leverage the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center as a foundation and heavy ion tumor treatment technology as a core focus. It facilitates deep collaboration in specialized medical partnerships, resource sharing, talent cultivation, and scientific innovation, ensuring high-quality, comprehensive healthcare for patients.

The event brought together distinguished medical experts of national-renown, including: Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiotherapy and Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, President of Lanzhou Branch of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center). Li Wenhui, Professor and Vice President of Yunnan Cancer Hospital, Director of the Yunnan Provincial Malignant Tumor Radiotherapy Research Center, and recipient of the State Council Special Allowance. The event was chaired by Zhang Weihong, Secretary of the Party Committee of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. Meanwhile, alliance representatives and the media visited the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center to witness the cutting-edge capabilities of China’s first heavy ion therapy system installed in a provincial capital.

In preparation for the future, the second China-made heavy ion therapy system will commence clinical operations at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has treated 100 patients using photon and heavy ion therapies, covering over 40 disease types including lung cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.

The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center boasts an elite talent network, led by experts such as Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiotherapy and Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Wang Junjie serves as President, ensuring robust technical leadership. The center is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity 4D imaging-guided linac, 3.0T MRI simulator, and GE 256-slice CT, all critical to delivering precise and scanner.
