Good News! Our Second Department of Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology Achieves Outstanding Results at the 2026 Gansu Provincial Surgical Skills Competition

Recently, the "2026 Gansu Provincial Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Skills Competition" and the "2026 Gansu Provincial PFNA Surgery Skills Competition for Elderly Hip Fractures," organized by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission and hosted by Lanzhou University Second Hospital and Gansu Third Provincial People's Hospital respectively, were successfully held at Lanzhou University Second Hospital and Gansu Third Provincial People's Hospital. A total of 36 orthopedic physician teams from across the province — including cities and counties — competed on the same stage. The competition featured theoretical examinations on core knowledge including minimally invasive spine surgery fundamentals, comprehensive perioperative assessment of elderly hip fractures, and osteoporosis. Participants engaged in intense competition through spinal anatomy demonstrations, minimally invasive skill operation demonstrations, surgical video assessments for elderly hip fracture PFNA internal fixation, and on‑site Q&A defenses.

After rigorous rounds of competition, our hospital stood out among the many participating teams across the province and won top honors. The Second Department of Bone and Soft Tissue Oncology team won the Team First Prize; Zhang Huawen won both Individual First Prize and Second Prize; Li Zhiqiang won Individual Third Prize. Our hospital's surgical videos, operational skills, and on‑site defense received the highest comprehensive score in the province.

These multiple prestigious awards fully demonstrate our hospital's overall orthopedic diagnostic and treatment standards, standardized surgical capabilities, and the strength of our refined perioperative management. They are a concentrated reflection of the hospital's long‑term commitment to high‑quality medical development, dedicated specialty advancement, systematic cultivation of young talent, and solid reinforcement of clinical fundamentals.

Behind these impressive results lie the hard‑core achievements of our hospital in leveraging its core heavy ion discipline to drive the iterative upgrading of orthopedic technology. In the field of complex and refractory malignant tumors, our hospital has developed nationwide influence, treating a large number of extremely challenging cases involving complex sarcomas of the pelvis, retroperitoneum, and inguinal region. These lesions are adjacent to critical blood vessels, nerves, and organs, posing immense surgical difficulty and risk — driving our orthopedic team to break through technical bottlenecks.

To adapt to the heavy ion multidisciplinary comprehensive care system, our orthopedic department has overcome numerous challenges and refined surgical techniques, successfully performing multiple globally and provincially first‑of‑their‑kind high‑difficulty innovative surgeries and filling multiple technical gaps. Through the practical tempering of extensive complex cases, the department's standardized diagnosis and treatment, refined surgical operations, and comprehensive perioperative management capabilities have continued to rise.

For a long time, our hospital has adhered to a patient‑centered approach, deeply cultivating specialty development, strengthening talent cultivation, actively carrying out new technologies and projects, steadily increasing the proportion of high‑difficulty surgeries, and solidly conducting clinical teaching. Going forward, our hospital will continue to refine diagnostic and treatment techniques, contributing to the high‑quality development of regional healthcare with high‑quality, efficient, and precise medical services.
