Singapore Enterprise Silk Road Exchange Delegation Visits Wuwei Heavy Ion Center for Research and Exchange

On September 18, a delegation of Singapore enterprises on the Silk Road exchange and research tour visited the Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. Approaching the visit from the perspective of Silk Road cultural exchange and international scientific and technological cooperation, the delegation conducted an on‑site exploration of China's high‑end medical equipment innovations, gaining an in‑depth understanding of the clinical application, international promotion, and integrated medical‑research development of heavy ion medical technology.

The delegation successively visited core functional areas, including the heavy ion sand table model room, the central control room, the treatment hall, and the research and innovation platform, gaining an immersive view of the full operational workflow of heavy ion therapy. Staff provided a detailed introduction to the domestically produced carbon‑ion therapy system, independently developed by the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, with complete independent intellectual property rights. They systematically explained the equipment's research and development journey, the technical principles of precision heavy ion therapy, the standardized operational management system, its distinctive clinical advantages, and the industrial development layout.

During the exchange, the delegation focused on China's breakthroughs in heavy ion medical technology innovation, achievements in the domestic substitution of high‑end medical equipment, and the current status of international medical and cultural exchange along the Silk Road. The two sides engaged in friendly discussions on topics including the international dissemination of heavy ion technology, mutual learning between Chinese and foreign medical cultures, and the open sharing of scientific and technological achievements.

The delegation highly recognized the development model of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center, which leverages its advantageous location along the Silk Road to deeply integrate national‑level hard‑core scientific achievements with international openness and exchange. They fully praised the remarkable results achieved by domestically produced heavy ion technology — breaking foreign technological monopolies, achieving large‑scale clinical application, and benefiting cancer patients at home and abroad.

As the birthplace of domestically produced heavy ion technology and an industry benchmark, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has long established international credibility through solid clinical data. The center has independently developed nine leading diagnostic and treatment technologies, both domestically and internationally, and is the only institution in the world to have two heavy ion therapy systems in clinical operation. Its pioneering techniques — including organ‑tumor spacer implantation radiotherapy and dual Bragg peak lattice radiotherapy — have precisely addressed the treatment challenges of complex and refractory tumors. To date, the center has completed more than 3,100 heavy ion treatments, covering all provinces across China and attracting patients from countries including Belgium, Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Canada, Jordan, Serbia, and Russia.

The visit by the Singapore enterprise Silk Road exchange and research delegation represents a deep integration of Silk Road cultural exchange and high‑end medical scientific innovation. It reflects both the strong international interest in China's achievements in heavy ion medical innovation and the growing international influence of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. With this visit as a bridge, the two sides further broadened their Silk Road perspective and built consensus on cooperation, laying a solid foundation for future cross‑border medical and cultural exchange, international promotion of scientific and technological achievements, and global academic interaction.

Looking ahead, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center will continue to build on its advantages in domestically produced heavy ion technology, benchmark against world‑class cancer care standards, and advance technological iteration, standards optimization, and discipline upgrading. It will further deepen international medical exchange and cooperation along the Silk Road, actively integrate into the global innovation system for radiation oncology, and accelerate the internationalization of domestically produced heavy ion technology and clinical outcomes. In doing so, it will contribute to the higher‑level international development of China's high‑end cancer medical equipment and treatment technologies, and to building a shared Silk Road health community and safeguarding the lives and health of people at home and abroad.
