ERAS Nursing Training Workshop on Hepatobiliary Surgery Successfully Concludes

On July 25, the Training Workshop on New Advances in ERAS Practice and Refined Nursing Management for Perioperative Hepatobiliary Surgery was successfully convened at the Third Conference Room, Heavy Ion Center, Wuwei Cancer Hospital, Gansu Province. The event brought together frontline nursing professionals from healthcare institutions nationwide to explore cutting-edge Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) techniques and chart new pathways for elevating specialized nursing care. The workshop marks a significant step toward standardizing perioperative nursing protocols across the region and translating ERAS principles into tangible clinical outcomes.

The session was chaired by Wang Xiaoqin, Head Nurse of the Hepatobiliary Surgery Department at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, with opening remarks delivered by Guo Yumei, Director of the Nursing Department. In her address, Director Guo emphasized that ERAS represents a cornerstone of modern surgical nursing, playing a pivotal role in mitigating surgical stress, shortening hospital stays, and enhancing the overall patient experience for hepatobiliary surgery patients. She encouraged participants to fully engage with the training, benchmark against national best practices, and implement refined nursing techniques to further strengthen the reputation of the region’s specialized oncology nursing services.

The training agenda was richly packed with clinically relevant insights. Cao Yong, Head Nurse of Hepatobiliary Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital of Army Medical University, presented on "Developing and Applying Key ERAS Nursing Techniques for Laparoscopic Complex Hepatectomy,"​ offering an in-depth analysis of perioperative challenges in complex liver surgeries. Chu Xiaoxia, Head Nurse of the Operating Room at Wuwei Cancer Hospital, explored "The Application and Value of ERAS in Hepatobiliary Surgery,"​ systematically outlining implementation strategies throughout the surgical continuum. Su Linglin, Head Nurse of the Breast Department at Wuwei Cancer Hospital, lectured on "Multimodal Analgesia Protocols, Pain Assessment Tools, and Patient Education,"​ detailing standardized approaches to pain management and health education. Drawing on real-world case studies, the experts shared forward-looking concepts and practical expertise in an accessible yet profound manner, sparking deep reflection among attendees. The sessions were co-chaired by Liu Li (Hepatobiliary Surgery, Army Medical University) with Ma Yanping (Radiotherapy Ward 1, Wuwei Cancer Hospital); Wan Xueliang (Cardiology) with Yang Xiaoxia (Gastroenterology Ward 1); and Liu Chunyan (Chemotherapy) with Hao Qiaolan (Integrative Medicine), ensuring smooth proceedings and fostering vibrant academic exchange.

In recent years, Wuwei Cancer Hospital has actively advanced its ERAS program by establishing multidisciplinary teams and standardizing perioperative protocols across gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, breast, and gynecological oncology surgeries, complemented by specialized rehabilitation strategies integrated with heavy ion radiotherapy. Through ongoing training and case reviews, the hospital has optimized preoperative education, nutritional management, intraoperative warming, multimodal analgesia, early mobilization, and prudent drain management, alongside structured post-discharge follow-up. These evidence-based interventions have effectively reduced postoperative complications, shortened hospital stays, and improved patient satisfaction, culminating in a tailored rapid recovery model suited to cancer patients in the Hexi Corridor region.

This workshop established a vital cross-regional platform for academic exchange, updating clinical knowledge on ERAS, standardizing perioperative nursing workflows, and enhancing capabilities in refined care and pain management—laying a solid foundation for regional nursing standardization. Looking ahead, Wuwei Cancer Hospital remains committed to aligning with global frontiers in oncological nursing. It will continue to foster cross-regional collaboration through regular academic forums and specialized training, deepen the clinical integration of refined ERAS nursing models, and refine its full-cycle perioperative care system. By strengthening ties with medical institutions both within and beyond Gansu Province, the hospital aims to deliver increasingly professional, precise, and high-quality tumor nursing services, thereby elevating cancer care standards across the Hexi region and safeguarding the health and well-being of the community.
