National Chief Expert Professor Hu Dayi Delivers Health Management Lecture
Engaging All in Building a Healthy Gansu – National Chief Expert Professor Hu Dayi Delivers Health Management Lecture
A healthy body requires comprehensive, multi‑level management. On June 27, the Lanzhou Campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center) hosted a major National Renowned Expert Health Lecture at Lanzhou University's Chengguan Campus. Professor Hu Dayi, a leading authority in cardiovascular medicine, delivered a lecture titled *"Building a Comprehensive Defense Line Against Cardiovascular Disease: A Five‑Level Prevention System."* In clear, accessible language, he broke down practical measures for implementing the five‑level prevention framework, emphasizing the importance of adjusting unhealthy lifestyle habits — including diet, physical activity, and sleep — and actively managing major risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and obesity to reduce the incidence of most cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Professor Hu systematically explained how whole‑life‑cycle chronic disease management can significantly lower the risk of life‑threatening acute events such as heart attack and stroke, thereby improving population health at all levels.
Over 2,000 attendees, including government officials, university faculty and students, community residents, and representatives of patients with chronic conditions, participated in the lecture.
Before and after the lecture, Professor Hu Dayi also provided on‑site consultations for patients with complex heart conditions, enabling residents to receive top‑level specialist care without leaving their community.

Cancer is a complex systemic disease that affects both body and mind. Beyond traditional modalities — surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy — and newer approaches such as targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and proton‑heavy ion therapy, a comprehensive, whole‑life‑cycle treatment approach is essential to achieve satisfactory outcomes. Tumor invasion, invasive procedures, and the use of cytotoxic drugs can affect vital organs — including the heart, liver, and kidneys — as well as the immune and hematopoietic systems. At the same time, the helplessness and anxiety that follow a life‑threatening diagnosis make physical and mental well‑being one of the most critical challenges for cancer patients.

Drawing on the comprehensive, whole‑life‑cycle cancer management model developed at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has built a systematic health management system anchored by two cutting‑edge therapeutic modalities — heavy ion therapy and radionuclide therapy. The center integrates seven service modules — including physical and mental wellness management, sleep therapy, traditional Chinese medicine physiotherapy, nutritional support, psychological counseling, rehabilitation therapy, and biological immunotherapy — supported by affiliated units such as a rehabilitation medicine department, a cancer early‑screening health check‑up center, and a 10‑S sleep center. This approach shifts the focus from a disease‑centered traditional treatment model to an integrated, full‑chain care pathway that covers prevention, screening, treatment, rehabilitation, and long‑term physical and mental health maintenance.

Within the comprehensive whole‑life‑cycle health management system, each functional component operates in synergy. The Health Check‑up Center focuses on early cancer detection and intervention through refined targeted screening and cancer prevention education, enabling disease interception at an early stage. The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine is dedicated to post‑treatment functional recovery and complication management, reducing the risk of tumor recurrence and metastasis through a scientific health management model, in line with the philosophy of full‑course chronic disease rehabilitation. The 10‑S Sleep Center addresses the high prevalence of insomnia among cancer patients by integrating a range of approaches — including light therapy, music therapy, dietary adjustments, traditional Chinese medicine, and physical therapy — to improve immune function and incorporate sleep care as an integral part of comprehensive cancer treatment.
In addition, supporting services such as psychological counseling, nutritional support, TCM‑based syndrome differentiation, and biological immunotherapy, grounded in the systemic nature of cancer, effectively complement the limitations of radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and local‑targeted heavy ion therapy. Together, they create a complete, integrated treatment loop that addresses both symptoms and root causes, and harmonizes physical and mental health.

To address the clinical challenge of chemotherapy‑ and radiotherapy‑induced toxicity to the heart, liver, and kidneys, the center has incorporated Professor Hu Dayi's specialized concepts in cardiovascular protection into the full treatment process. By integrating a multi‑organ protection protocol throughout the care pathway, the center aims to minimize treatment‑related collateral damage, ensuring that patients receive more comprehensive and safer diagnostic and therapeutic support.

Professor Hu Dayi's lecture on the five‑level cardiovascular prevention system further validated the scientific basis and necessity of comprehensive, whole‑life‑cycle management for both chronic diseases and cancer. At Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, we have built a system anchored by cutting‑edge heavy ion and radionuclide technologies, integrating early cancer screening, post‑treatment rehabilitation, sleep intervention, physical and mental wellness support, traditional Chinese medicine, and biological immunotherapy. By moving beyond the traditional disease‑centric model and adopting a refined, individualized integrated care approach — one that balances treatment safety with quality of life — our hospital is establishing a regional benchmark for comprehensive cancer care, dedicated to safeguarding the overall health of the people of Gansu.
