How long does a PET-CT examination take?

Considering getting a PET-CT scan but unsure how long it will take?

     No need to worry—many people are unclear about this, which makes it difficult to arrange time for the examination. Below, I’ll provide a general overview of the process.

The PET/CT examination process can be divided into several steps: appointment scheduling, medical history collection, weight measurement, blood glucose testing, intravenous injection, a 30–60 minute rest period (to allow for medication absorption), undergoing the examination, and waiting for the results. Pre-examination preparations take about 20–30 minutes. A nurse will explain the procedure and precautions to the patient before administering the imaging agent. Afterward, the patient needs to rest quietly, avoiding unnecessary movement and talking. During the scan, the patient must lie still and cooperate with the technician, assuming a hands-behind-the-head position at certain intervals. After the examination, patients should not leave immediately, as some may require delayed scanning depending on their condition. Patients must wait for medical staff to notify them before they can leave. The entire examination process takes approximately 3 hours.
