On the important occasion of the first anniversary of the opening of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, we extend our sincere greetings and warm invitations to all colleagues who have long been concerned with the development of particle therapy for tumors and have supported the construction of our center! As the first medical institution in China to use a carbon ion therapy system with independent intellectual property rights, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center leverages the research strength of the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and five years of clinical experience from the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center. Since commencing heavy ion treatments in November 2024, the center has provided precise and efficient medical services for cancer patients in the Northwest region, and has further initiated a new pattern of integrated operation between the Wuwei and Lanzhou centers, becoming a core force driving the technological upgrade of regional cancer treatment.

To systematically summarize the clinical practice achievements of the center's first year of operation, build an academic exchange platform in the field of particle therapy domestically and internationally, and promote technological innovation and industry collaboration, the center will hold the "2025 Academic Conference on New Advances in Tumor Particle Therapy Technology & Celebration of the First Anniversary of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital" on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. • •Inviting renowned domestic experts in radiotherapy to conduct academic forums, delving into cutting-edge topics such as key technologies in heavy ion cancer therapy, innovations in the collaborative diagnosis and treatment model of the Lanzhou (Heavy Ion) Radiotherapy Alliance, while simultaneously focusing on hotspots in particle therapy equipment development and clinical translation;
• •Releasing the special issue on heavy ion therapy for tumors from the Chinese Medical Association's "World of Health" magazine, detailing the academic value of the special issue in summarizing clinical experience and promoting technical standards;

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center​​

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public tertiary Grade A specialized cancer hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second heavy ion clinical application center in China with independent intellectual property rights operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. Together with the first Chinese heavy ion therapy system, the second Chinese heavy ion tumor therapy system commenced clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has completed heavy ion and photon treatments for over 330 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioma.

The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, building expert workstations led by 50 top authorities in the industry, including Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Tumor Radiotherapy Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiotherapy Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the President, providing strong technical support for heavy ion therapy.

Furthermore, the hospital campus is equipped with a series of cutting-edge medical equipment such as the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity 4D image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation and positioning MRI, GE 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian Iridium-192 imported afterloader. These hardware facilities lay a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring efficiency and precision in the treatment process.

Aiming to build a comprehensive, full-life-cycle cancer treatment system, the hospital has established departments including Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology Rehabilitation, Intensive Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging Department, Laboratory Department, Ultrasound Medicine Department, Blood Bank, and Hematology Center Laboratory. It provides comprehensive treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, internal medicine, surgical treatments, as well as imaging, laboratory tests, ultrasound, and bone marrow cell morphology examinations.
