Intelligence Gathering and Strength Consolidation | Professor Wei Lichun Dedicates to Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, Empowering a New Journey in Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment
Recently, Professor Wei Lichun from the Department of Radiation Oncology at Xijing Hospital has officially joined the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Tumor Hospital in a regular stationed mode, injecting new and strong momentum into the development of our hospital in the field of tumor treatment.
Professor Wei Lichun has achieved remarkable accomplishments in the field of tumor radiation therapy and possesses extensive clinical experience. As a senior expert in radiation therapy, she is a Chief Physician and Doctoral Supervisor. She holds positions including Vice Leader of the Gynecologic Oncology Group of the Radiation Oncology Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, Vice Chairman of the Brachytherapy Committee of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Member of the Colorectal Cancer Radiation Therapy Committee of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Vice Chairman of the Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Committee of the Shaanxi Anti-Cancer Association, and Chairman of the Tumor Radiation Therapy Branch of the Shaanxi Daytime Medical Association. She has long been engaged in the specialty of tumor radiation therapy, specializing in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of gynecological tumors (such as cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, uterine sarcoma, ovarian cancer, etc.), digestive system tumors (such as rectal cancer, liver and gallbladder tumors, etc.), urinary system tumors (such as prostate cancer, bladder cancer, etc.), bone and soft tissue tumors, and lymphoma. She enjoys a high reputation and extensive influence in the industry.

During ward rounds, Professor Wei Lichun meticulously examines patients' conditions and treatment progress, engaging in in-depth communication with department doctors. She emphasizes that tumor treatment must adhere to the principles of comprehensive measures and individualization, taking into full account factors such as the patient's physical condition, tumor type, and stage to develop more scientific and reasonable treatment plans.

The integration of Professor Wei Lichun is a vivid epitome of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center's continuous efforts to build an international expert cooperation platform and gather global wisdom.

For a long time, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has always maintained an open attitude to absorb top medical talents. It has successively hired international authoritative experts such as Professor Tatsuaki Kanai from Gunma University School of Medicine in Japan, Professor Hirohiko Tsujii, former President of the National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Professor Jörg Hauffe, former President of the RPTC Munich Proton Therapy Center in Germany, Professor Olga, Professor Ren Yimin, former Chairman of the Taiwan Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, and Professor Wu Jiaming, a renowned radiation physicist from Taiwan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, promoting the alignment of Chinese standards with international ones through technical exchanges. Recently, it has further introduced Professor Yasuo Yoshioka from the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research and Professor György Kovács, Director of the Center for Brachytherapy at the University of Lübeck in Germany (also Director of the Education Program at the University of the Sacred Heart in Italy), to work at the hospital on a long-term stationed basis. They integrate Chinese diagnostic and treatment standards into clinical teaching and technical guidance, laying a solid foundation for building an internationally competitive tumor treatment system and standard output platform. The concept of "gathering outstanding talents from around the world and putting them to use" has laid the groundwork for Professor Wei Lichun's rapid integration into the team, enabling her to quickly combine her technical advantages with the center's existing resources to form stronger diagnostic and treatment capabilities.
The joining of Professor Wei Lichun will undoubtedly significantly enhance the discipline construction level and clinical diagnosis and treatment capability of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. Looking forward, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center will continue to firmly promote the Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and the work of 50 expert workstations, continuously improving its comprehensive strength. We firmly believe that under the leadership of outstanding experts such as Wei Lichun, Zhao Ren, Yu Zhilong, and Fan Ruitai, the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center will continue to consolidate strength to break through the challenges in tumor treatment, bringing new hope to global tumor patients.
Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center
Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public Class A Grade Three tumor specialist hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second heavy ion clinical application center in China with independent intellectual property rights, operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. In collaboration with the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system, the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system was put into clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. As of now, the center has completed photon and heavy ion treatment for over 300 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and brain glioma.
The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, bringing together top industry authorities. It features expert workstations led by 50 renowned figures, including Professor Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Chinese Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Chinese Medical Association's Radiation Oncology Branch, serves as the president, providing strong technical support for heavy ion treatment.
Meanwhile, the hospital campus is equipped with a series of cutting-edge medical devices, including Varian's VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta's Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation positioning MRI, GE's 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian's imported iridium-192 afterloader. These hardware facilities form a solid foundation for heavy ion treatment, ensuring efficiency and precision throughout the process.
Aiming to build a comprehensive, full-lifecycle cancer treatment system, the hospital has established departments such as Radiotherapy, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Cancer Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Center Laboratory. It offers comprehensive treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, internal medicine, and surgical oncology, as well as services such as imaging, laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cell morphology examinations.
