Wuwei Heavy Ion Breaks International Monopoly and Achieves Leapfrog Progress

— The Second Standardized Training Course on Proton and Heavy Ion Radiotherapy Technology Concludes Successfully in Wuwei

From September 26 to 28, the Second Standardized Training Course on Clinical Application of Restricted Medical Technologies – Standardized Training for Technicians in Proton and Heavy Ion Accelerator Radiotherapy was successfully held in Wuwei, Gansu. Hosted by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA), it was co-organized by Wuwei Cancer Hospital (Gansu Province) and Tsinghua Big Health Team.

Yee-Min Jen , Former Chairman of the Taiwan Radiation Oncology Treatment Association and Specially Appointed Professor at Wuwei Cancer Hospital, chaired the first day of the program.

This academic gathering, which pooled top domestic expertise, not only nurtured professional talents for China’s national particle radiotherapy sector but also—through the practical achievements of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center—showcased to the industry China’s historic leap from following international peers to leading globally in heavy ion therapy. It further injected strong momentum into advancing high-quality development of China’s particle medical industry.

As a high-level academic exchange platform in China’s particle radiotherapy sector, this training course gathered a stellar lineup of top domestic experts.

Academician Ma Jun of the Chinese Academy of Sciences led the lectures. Joining him were over a dozen leading figures in China’s particle therapy field—including Tang Jintian, Deputy Director of the Institute of Medical Physics and Engineering at Tsinghua University’s Department of Engineering Physics; Wu Xiaojin, Vice President of Xuzhou Central Hospital; Shi Pengyue from Shandong Cancer Hospital; and Wu Kailiang from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center—who, alongside Wuwei Cancer Hospital’s President Ye Yancheng, Vice President Zhang Yanshan, and Ma Xiaoyun, Director of the Radiation Physics Department, delivered in-depth sessions focusing on cutting-edge technologies such as heavy ion therapy, proton therapy, and BNCT (boron neutron capture therapy).

From the dimensions of technological R&D breakthroughs, clinical application practices, and standard system development, the experts systematically unpacked the latest achievements and trends in particle radiotherapy. They crafted an academic feast that blended theoretical rigor with practical value for all participants.

During his lecture, Professor Tang Jintian offered a sharply condensed assessment: “Wuwei is the Jinggangshan of China’s heavy ion therapy. Its arduous entrepreneurial journey has created countless miracles—and today, it continues to write new chapters of internationally leading heavy ion therapy breakthroughs.”

This remark not only affirms the development achievements of the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center but also precisely anchors its irreplaceable “benchmark status” in the history of China’s particle medicine.
