Wuwei Heavy Ion Center Fully Operational: China's First Heavy Ion Treatment System Adds Power and Speed
On May 28th, the opening ceremony for the heavy ion campus of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital was held. From that day on, 42 disciplines including oncology, gastroenterology, and hepatology have fully commenced operations at the hospital's heavy ion campus. Currently, patients from across the country, including Hong Kong and Taiwan, are routinely coming to the hospital for treatment, and international patients from countries such as Belgium and Luxembourg have also started seeking care there.
Xia Jiawen, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in his speech that the heavy ion campus of the Wuwei Cancer Hospital covers a large area, has a advanced scale, and a beautiful environment, making it a "hospital that least resembles a hospital," which is beneficial for patient recovery. The campus integrates diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation into a complete chain, and the heavy ion treatment equipment within has become a powerful weapon for humanity against cancer and other major health threats.
Chen Yifu, Vice Mayor of Wuwei City, stated that the heavy ion campus of the Wuwei Medical Science Academy is equipped with China's first heavy ion treatment device with independent intellectual property rights, which has already treated 739 cancer patients. In recent years, the hospital has fully leveraged the advantages of "TCM holistic syndrome differentiation and treatment + heavy ion precision therapy," and is committed to building China's first professional heavy ion tumor rehabilitation institution.

Mi Denghai, former Director of the Gansu Provincial Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Counsellor of the Gansu Provincial Government, said that China's first independently developed and applied heavy ion device has characteristics superior to those produced in other countries in many aspects. The fact that patients travel across the oceans to seek treatment at the Wuwei Medical Science Academy Cancer Hospital indicates that the hospital possesses many high-quality resources in the stage of cancer treatment.
Ye Yanchang, President of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, explained that the campus's smart cloud hospital functions are powerful, having achieved the management goal of "double cloud migration" - work terminals without computer hosts and no network server rooms within the hospital. The architectural style of the campus breaks away from the traditional image of high-rise, towering tertiary-A hospitals, presenting instead a garden-style medical complex seamlessly connected by a long corridor-style main hospital street.
Wu Jiaming, Chief Physicist at Taiwan's Chang Gung Hospital, expressed his sincere admiration, stating that in mainland China, not only imaging equipment but even heavy ion equipment can be manufactured independently.
During the opening ceremony, the Gansu Wuwei Medical Science Academy Cancer Hospital also signed medical consortium agreements with the Gansu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Liangzhou District Hospital.
It is reported that the heavy ion campus of the Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital represents a total investment of 1.5 billion yuan, with a total construction area of 180,000 square meters, and can accommodate 1,500 patient beds. It is a modern hospital integrating high-tech medical care, biological immunotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine treatment, physical and mental health rehabilitation, and clinical research.
