Sugar Heart Project Launched at Wuwei Cancer Hospital Geriatrics Department
Sugar Heart Project Successfully Launched in Geriatrics Department of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital
Recently, the "National Study on the Epidemiology and Management Enhancement of Coronary Heart Disease in Community-Based Diabetic Patients" (abbreviated as the "Sugar-Heart Project"), initiated by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, was officially launched at the Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital and is being implemented by the Department of Geriatrics, with the project progressing smoothly. As a public welfare health promotion initiative, the project aims to enhance the early screening and intervention capabilities for cardiovascular diseases in diabetic patients, providing more precise, efficient, and convenient health management services to the residents of Wuwei and surrounding areas.

Project Kick-off Meeting
Leveraging advanced medical equipment and technical support, the project focuses on high-risk groups with diabetes complicated by cardiovascular diseases to carry out systematic screening and evaluation. As a regional medical center, Wuwei Cancer Hospital gives full play to its multi-disciplinary collaboration strengths, integrating resources from endocrinology, cardiology, medical imaging, and other departments to provide patients with one-stop, comprehensive health management services. Since its launch, the project has completed early risk assessment and health intervention for multiple patients, effectively promoting the optimization and implementation of the entire process of "prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment" for chronic diseases.

Leaders from the National and Gansu Provincial Centers for Disease Control and Prevention inspected the implementation of our hospital's project
Due to factors such as climatic conditions and residents' lifestyle habits, the prevention and control of diabetes and its complications face relatively severe challenges in the Wuwei region. The implementation of the "Sugar-Heart Project" has not only enhanced the awareness and management capabilities of primary medical institutions regarding "diabetes-cardiac comorbidity" but also provided patients with opportunities for early detection and treatment, significantly reducing the health and economic burdens caused by advanced complications. This project represents a key initiative by the hospital to actively implement the "Healthy China" strategy and serve the local community. In the future, the hospital will continue to expand the project's coverage, optimize service processes, and extend high-quality medical resources to primary healthcare institutions to benefit more people.

Director Wu Chengbin, the project lead at our hospital, stated that the smooth progress of the project has relied on the close collaboration and strong support from multiple departments, including the hospital leadership, Public Health Department, Medical Affairs Department, Imaging Department, ECG Room, Information Center, and Finance Department. This not only reflects the high recognition from the project initiators regarding our hospital's capabilities in project execution, technical expertise, organizational coordination, and multidisciplinary collaboration but also marks a solid step forward for Wuwei in the field of chronic disease management, injecting new vitality into the development of regional public health efforts.
Introduction to the Department of Geriatrics
The Department of Geriatrics at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a comprehensive clinical division integrating medical treatment, education, prevention, healthcare, and rehabilitation. It serves as the lead institution for Wuwei City's "Hypertension Standardized Center," a municipal-level center for cardiomyopathy under the National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, a specialized unit for geriatric diabetes, and the only medical facility in the city providing palliative care services. Addressing the physiological characteristics of elderly patients, such as multimorbidity and polypharmacy, the department fully adopts a "patient-centered" individualized diagnosis and treatment model alongside a comprehensive geriatric assessment system. Utilizing a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach, it integrates high-quality hospital resources to deliver one-stop, continuous medical services for elderly patients.
The department's scope of diagnosis and treatment covers common geriatric diseases, chronic conditions (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease), geriatric syndromes (e.g., falls, dementia, malnutrition, frailty), as well as oncology-related internal medicine treatments and palliative supportive care. With an experienced and skilled medical and nursing team, advanced equipment, and a commitment to improving functional status and quality of life for elderly patients, the department exemplifies the modern integration of humanistic care and professional expertise in geriatric medicine, establishing itself as a trusted health guardian for elderly patients in the region.
