On September 5, 2025, the Lanzhou event of the 2025 National Drug Safety Awareness Week, themed "Join Hands in Building a Drug Safety Defense Line," was held at the Lanzhou Municipal Senior Citizens Activity Center.

The event was jointly organized by multiple departments in Lanzhou City, aiming to popularize knowledge on the safety of drugs, medical devices, and cosmetics, as well as to enhance public awareness and capability, especially among the elderly, in the rational use of drugs and the safe use of medical devices. The activities included leadership speeches, thematic lectures,science popularization and publicity, and on-site free medical consultations, among other segments.

During the thematic lecture session, Vice President Li Xiaojun delivered a systematic and engaging presentation on the development status and construction of our hospital, the principles of carbon ion therapy technology, its current clinical applications, treatment efficacy, and indications. Drawing on our hospital’s extensive experience in heavy ion therapy, he highlighted the critical role of cutting-edge medical technology in cancer treatment and provided detailed answers to questions of public concern, such as treatment safety and accessibility, which received an enthusiastic response from the audience.

The event also featured a lecture on safe medication for the elderly by Yang Yanbiao, Director of the Pharmacy Department at the Lanzhou First People’s Hospital. Science popularization and publicity activities were conducted by units including the Municipal Market Supervision Bureau and the Food and Drug Monitoring and Evaluation Center. Experts from the Gansu Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and the First Hospital of Lanzhou University offered on-site free medical consultations for elderly attendees.

Looking ahead, Lanzhou Heavy Ion Hospital will continue to adhere to the principle of "guiding by technology and serving the people," further promoting the application and innovation of heavy ion technology in the field of cancer treatment. This effort aims to enhance the medical standards in Gansu Province and even the broader Northwest region, bringing health and hope to more patients.

Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center

Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public tertiary Class A specialized oncology hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, the second heavy ion clinical application center with independent Chinese intellectual property rights operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, commenced clinical operation on November 15, 2024, alongside the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system—joining the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system. To date, the center has treated over 250 patients using photon and heavy ion therapies, covering conditions such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.

The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, anchored by an expert workstation led by 50 top industry authorities, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the center’s president, providing robust technical support for heavy ion therapy.

Additionally, the facility is equipped with a suite of cutting-edge medical devices, including the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation and positioning MRI, GE 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian iridium-192 imported afterloader. These advanced hardware systems form a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring both efficiency and precision in treatment delivery.

Aiming to establish a comprehensive, full-life-cycle oncology treatment system, the hospital operates specialized departments such as Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Central Laboratory. It provides integrated treatments including photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, medical and surgical oncology, as well as diagnostic services such as imaging, laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cytology examinations.
