Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital’s Department of Nuclear Medicine Wins Honor at the "First Gansu Provincial Health Industry SPECT/CT Skills Competition"

From August 29 to 30, the First Gansu Provincial Health Industry SPECT/CT Skills Competition, hosted by the Gansu Provincial Health Commission and organized by the Second Hospital of Lanzhou University, along with the Third Cuiying Nuclear Medicine Development Seminar and the 2025 Gansu Provincial Nuclear Medicine Specialist Alliance Training Program, was successfully held in Lanzhou. With the theme “Mastering Skills to Empower, Innovating Nuclearly for the Future,” the event aimed to strengthen nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment capabilities across the province, accelerate the homogenization of nuclear medicine standards, enhance primary-level nuclear medicine services, and promote the sustainable development of nuclear medicine healthcare in Gansu.

The competition was divided into three categories—diagnosis, technology, and nursing—and included both theoretical exams and practical skill assessments. A total of 95 participants from 23 hospitals across the province (48 in the diagnosis group, 28 in the technology group, and 19 in the nursing group) competed fiercely. The team from Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, led by Tao Xuemei, Director of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, took part in the event. After intense competition, the hospital’s nuclear medicine team won the group second prize for their solid theoretical knowledge and outstanding operational skills. Liu Jinhong won the individual first prize in the diagnosis group, Song Wei won the individual second prize in the technology group, and Yang Qing received the outstanding award in the nursing group.

This series of events adhered to the principle of "applying what is learned, using competition to promote training, and integrating training with competition." Through the deep integration of skills competitions and academic seminars, it built a bridge for exchange and mutual progress among nuclear medicine professionals in the province. The event featured sharing of cutting-edge technologies, discussions on clinical experience, and interpretations of standardized operating procedures. It not only provided a platform for young physicians to showcase their talents and stimulate their sense of ambition and pride in the profession but also promoted the standardization of SPECT/CT operational skills, laying a solid foundation for overall improvement in nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment capabilities in the province.

In recent years, nuclear medicine in Gansu Province has developed rapidly under the dual drivers of policy guidance and technological innovation. Taking Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital as an example, with the operation of standardized nuclide wards, its Department of Nuclear Medicine has been successfully established as a Wuwei Municipal Key Clinical Discipline, the Wuwei Municipal Nuclear Medicine Medical Quality Control Center, and has undertaken demonstration projects for the advancement of nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment by the Chinese Medical Association. It has continued to make breakthroughs in areas such as the application of new nuclides, becoming a benchmark for regional nuclear medicine development. Such practices serve as a vivid reflection of the continuous advancement of specialized nuclear medicine construction in the province.

The successful hosting of this event not provided a concentrated review of the current achievements in nuclear medicine in Gansu but also sounded a clarion call for promoting high-quality development of the discipline. In the future, with the homogeneous improvement of diagnosis and treatment capabilities and the continuous strengthening of primary-level services, nuclear medicine in Gansu will provide more precise and efficient healthcare to protect public health, contributing "Gansu strength" to the building of a healthy China.
