On August 28, Professor Zhao Ren from the Department of Radiation Oncology at Ningxia Medical University General Hospital officially joined the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center and conducted a series of important academic exchanges, including clinical rounds in various radiation oncology departments, participation in discussions of complex cases, and providing guidance on cutting-edge technologies.

As a senior expert in the field of radiation oncology, Professor Zhao Ren holds multiple prestigious titles, including Chief Physician, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Therapy Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, Committee Member of the Lung Cancer Professional Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association, Committee Member of the Targeted Therapy Professional Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association, Committee Member of the Esophageal Cancer Group under the Nutrition and Supportive Care Professional Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association, Director of the Lung Cancer Professional Committee of the Ningxia Anti-Cancer Association, Director of the Ningxia Clinical Medical Research Center for Malignant Tumors, and Deputy Director of the Esophageal Cancer Professional Committee of the Ningxia Anti-Cancer Association. He has extensive expertise in the clinical and research aspects of comprehensive treatments for thoracic tumors (such as lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and mediastinal tumors) involving radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. He enjoys a high reputation and widespread influence in the industry.

The addition of Professor Zhao Ren is a significant achievement for Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital in promoting the Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and the establishment of 50 expert workstations. As the only hospital in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has always been committed to the continuous development and innovation of cancer treatment technologies. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second clinical application center for heavy ions in China operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. In collaboration with the first Chinese heavy ion therapy system, the second Chinese heavy ion tumor therapy system was put into clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. As of now, the center has completed photon and heavy ion treatments for over 290 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.

During the clinical rounds, Professor Zhao Ren visited the wards to carefully understand the condition and treatment progress of each patient. He engaged in in-depth discussions with doctors from various radiation oncology departments. Based on the individual circumstances of the patients, he provided precise and personalized treatment recommendations. He particularly emphasized that cancer treatment is a comprehensive and complex process that requires considering the patient's overall physical condition, tumor type, stage, and many other factors to develop the most suitable treatment plan for each patient.

Professor Zhao Ren's addition will undoubtedly significantly enhance the disciplinary development and clinical diagnosis and treatment capabilities of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center. Looking ahead, the hospital will continue to steadfastly promote the work of the Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and the 50 expert workstations, continuously improving its overall strength. Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned public tertiary Class A specialized oncology hospital. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center, the second heavy ion clinical application center with independent Chinese intellectual property rights operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, commenced clinical operation on November 15, 2024, alongside the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system—joining the first Chinese heavy ion treatment system. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite talent system, anchored by an expert workstation led by 50 top industry authorities, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the center’s president, providing robust technical support for heavy ion therapy.

Additionally, the facility is equipped with a suite of cutting-edge medical devices, including the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, 3.0T simulation and positioning MRI, GE 256-slice high-end CT, and Varian iridium-192 imported afterloader. These advanced hardware systems form a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring both efficiency and precision in treatment delivery.

Aiming to establish a comprehensive, full-life-cycle oncology treatment system, the hospital operates specialized departments such as Radiation Oncology, Medical Oncology/Hematology, Surgical Oncology, Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine Oncology Rehabilitation, Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Imaging, Laboratory Medicine, Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Central Laboratory.
