Top Domestic and International Experts Join Forces — Uniting Global Wisdom to Empower a New Era for the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center
On August 26, Professor Yasuo Yoshioka, Department of Radiation Oncology, Cancer Hospital, Japanese Foundation for Cancer Research, and Professor Fan Ruitai, Department of Radiation Oncology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University, were invited to provide specialized outpatient services at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital in Gansu Province.
During their visit, they went deep into the clinical front line, actively participating in ward rounds and providing academic guidance.
This initiative not only delivered internationally standardized, personalized treatment plans for patients, but also served as a significant practice in implementing the hospital’s high-quality development strategy of "Global Experts Rejoining.

During the ward rounds, the two professors, drawing on their extensive clinical experience and international cutting-edge technologies, engaged in in-depth discussions with the hospital’s medical team regarding complex and challenging cases.
From patient assessment, optimization of radiotherapy plans, to prediction of treatment outcomes, every detail incorporated the concept of individualized care.
They emphasized not only the standardized application of precision radiotherapy techniques, but also the importance of developing comprehensive treatment strategies tailored to each patient’s physical and psychological condition.

In recent years, the Heavy Ion Therapy Center of Wuwei Cancer Hospital in Gansu Province has consistently adhered to the strategic core of "Gathering Global Resources to Empower Healthy China." Through five high-quality development initiatives, it has continuously advanced the evolution of heavy ion therapy technology. These efforts include optimizing the fee model to activate the inclusive potential of heavy ion medical treatment; advancing clinical research on heavy ion therapy and establishing Chinese guidelines aligned with international standards; actively promoting a global alliance to solidify the foundation for high-quality development; and further deepening the strategy of recruiting global experts, thereby forming an international expert think tank that covers the entire chain of heavy ion therapy.

Highlights from the professional study session and book gifting ceremony
The visit of the two professors is not only a tangible manifestation of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Therapy Center at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital connecting with high-quality global medical resources, but also reflects the determination of regional medical institutions in China’s high-quality development journey—embracing international frontiers with an open mindset and breaking through diagnostic and therapeutic barriers through pragmatic measures. This process is both a vivid practice of the concept of “global medical collaboration” and provides a living example for exploring a high-quality development path in China’s oncology prevention and treatment field that integrates “international cooperation with local innovation.”
Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center
Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital is a state-owned, public tertiary Class A specialized hospital for oncology. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second clinical application center for heavy ion therapy in China to be operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, utilizing China's independently developed intellectual property. In collaboration with the first Chinese heavy ion therapy system, the second Chinese heavy ion tumor treatment system was put into clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has completed over 280 cases of patient treatments using both photon and heavy ion therapy, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.
The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center has established an elite and outstanding talent system. It has built an expert workstation led by 50 top industry authorities, including Shen Wenjiang, Lifetime Honorary Professor of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Peking University Health Science Center, and Professor Xu Bo, Standing Committee Member of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Professor Wang Junjie, Chairman of the Radiation Oncology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, serves as the hospital president, providing strong technical support for heavy ion therapy.
Additionally, the medical campus is equipped with a series of cutting-edge medical devices, such as the Varian VitalBeam medical linear accelerator, the Elekta Infinity four-dimensional image-guided linear accelerator, a 3.0T simulation and positioning MRI, a GE 256-slice high-end CT, and the Varian Iridium-192 imported afterloader. These advanced hardware facilities lay a solid foundation for heavy ion therapy, ensuring the efficiency and precision of the treatment process.
The hospital aims to establish a comprehensive, full-life-cycle oncology treatment system. It operates departments including the Department of Radiation Oncology, Department of Oncology/Internal Medicine & Hematology, Department of Surgical Oncology, Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine for Tumor Rehabilitation, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Digestive Endoscopy Center, Department of Imaging, Department of Laboratory Medicine, Department of Ultrasound Medicine, Blood Bank, and Hematology Center Laboratory. The center provides comprehensive treatments such as photon radiotherapy, chemotherapy, heavy ion therapy, medical and surgical combined therapy, as well as imaging, medical laboratory testing, ultrasound, and bone marrow cell morphology examinations.
