【National Chief Experts Provide Daily Consultations】Top Experts Regularly Stationed at Hospital, Boosting Heavy Ion Precision Treatment with Enhanced Support

On January 10th, Professor Ma Lulin from the Department of Urology at Peking University Third Hospital and Professor Chen Jun from the Department of Retroperitoneal Tumor Surgery at Peking University People's Hospital officially joined the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital under a regular stationing model. This has injected new and strong momentum into the development of our hospital in the field of cancer treatment, powerfully demonstrating the new pattern of high-quality medical services at our hospital: "localization of high-end medical resources and routine services from chief experts."

Professor Ma Lulin, as a Second-Level Professor at Peking University, doctoral supervisor, and postdoctoral co-supervisor, has dedicated nearly forty years to the field of urology. He currently serves as the Vice President of the Haidian Branch of Peking University Third Hospital and is a leading authority in China on kidney transplantation and the diagnosis and treatment of complex urological tumors. His expertise in living donor kidney transplantation and combined pancreas-kidney transplantation has reached internationally advanced levels. He is highly skilled in performing challenging surgeries such as robot-assisted/laparoscopic removal of large adrenal tumors, radical nephrectomy for kidney cancer with inferior vena cava tumor thrombus, nerve-sparing radical prostatectomy, and Studer orthotopic neobladder reconstruction. Having relieved the suffering of tens of thousands of patients, he enjoys an outstanding reputation within the profession.

During ward rounds and consultations, Professor Ma Lulin visited clinical departments in person, working alongside the center's medical team to conduct case discussions. He meticulously analyzed patient imaging data on a case-by-case basis, traced the progression of each patient's condition, and dynamically optimized treatment plans in line with cutting-edge international diagnostic and therapeutic standards. This has enabled patients in Northwest China to access world-class medical services right at their doorstep.

Professor Chen Jun, who combines an international perspective with solid expertise, focuses on the challenging field of retroperitoneal tumors—a condition characterized by high treatment difficulty and low incidence—bringing international diagnostic and treatment solutions to patients. As a member of the European-American-Australasian Retroperitoneal Sarcoma Collaboration Group, he precisely interprets imaging data of complex cases during consultations, offering professional judgments on key issues such as surgical strategies and radiotherapy indications for primary and metastatic retroperitoneal tumors. His extensive experience, particularly in multidisciplinary approaches to treating complex cases, provides patients with more comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic options.

During ward rounds, Professor Chen shared advanced diagnostic and treatment concepts and clinical research achievements from Europe and the United States, and discussed with the center's medical team the application scenarios of heavy-ion radiotherapy in treating retroperitoneal tumors. This provided valuable insights for elevating the local standard of medical care.

In recent years, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has achieved significant results in promoting the heavy-ion therapy alliance and the establishment of 50 expert workstations. As the only hospital in the world operating two heavy-ion therapy systems simultaneously, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital remains steadfastly committed to the continuous development and innovation of cancer treatment technologies. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second clinical application center for heavy-ion therapy in China with independent intellectual property rights, operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. The system began clinical operation at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has completed photon and heavy-ion therapy for over 400 patients, covering conditions such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.

The regular stationing of Professor Ma Lulin and Professor Chen Jun at the hospital is another reflection of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital putting into practice its philosophy of "gathering cutting-edge global technologies to benefit cancer patients worldwide." The center not only adopts an open and inclusive approach by actively introducing internationally leading heavy-ion therapy technologies, building bridges for cross-border academic exchanges, and engaging in deep technical dialogues and experience-sharing with top experts from countries such as Japan and Germany, but also demonstrates a pragmatic and dedicated spirit by vigorously introducing authoritative domestic clinical expert resources. Through regular ward round guidance and personalized consultation services, the center is advancing clinical practices toward standardization, elevating diagnostic and treatment levels to ensure uniformity, continuously deepening the development of disciplinary expertise, and lighting the way of life for cancer patients.
