Professor Zhang Kaixian Joins, Empowering Cancer Care
【National Chief Experts Daily Consultation】Industry Leader Professor Zhang Kaixian Joins Our Hospital, Empowering a New Journey in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment
On January 9th, Professor Zhang Kaixian from the Oncology Department of Tengzhou People's Hospital in Shandong Province arrived at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to provide regular technical guidance and specialized outpatient services. This initiative deeply integrates the high-quality medical resources from eastern China with the advanced heavy-ion technology in the northwest, offering core support for the high-quality development of the center's radiotherapy discipline and the significant enhancement of its clinical service standards. It powerfully demonstrates the new pattern of high-quality medical services at our hospital: "localizing high-end medical resources and making chief experts' services a daily practice."

Professor Zhang Kaixian, as a chief physician and master's supervisor, has dedicated many years to the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors. He holds numerous honors, including "Huaihai Science and Technology Talent" and "Tengzhou Craftsman." Additionally, he serves as the leader of Shandong Province's Clinical Elite Specialty, Clinical Key Specialty, and Key Medical and Health Disciplines, as well as the director of the Key Laboratory for Precision Minimally Invasive Treatment of Tumors at Xuzhou Medical University. He has accumulated extensive clinical experience in comprehensive treatments such as radiotherapy, chemotherapy, interventional therapy, and minimally invasive procedures. He is particularly skilled in precision radiotherapy and minimally invasive treatments under imaging guidance, and his exceptional medical expertise has given countless cancer patients a new lease on life.
During the teaching ward rounds, Professor Zhang visited the wards in person, carefully examining the recovery progress of each patient. Through bedside consultations and physical examinations, he accurately assessed the treatment outcomes. Drawing on clinical cases, he engaged in in-depth discussions with the center's medical team on key issues related to complex cases. He also shared cutting-edge diagnostic and treatment concepts and practical clinical techniques, helping the center's team enhance their ability to manage challenging cases.
In the operating room, Professor Zhang personally guided and performed a radioactive iodine-125 seed implantation surgery. Leveraging the hospital's advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment and his expertise in imaging-guided techniques, Professor Zhang led the surgical team in successfully completing the procedure. The entire surgery was characterized by minimal trauma, precise targeting, and reduced bleeding, fully showcasing the advantages of minimally invasive treatment. Professor Zhang also reviewed the surgical process with the team, offering professional suggestions on optimizing seed distribution and dose control, thereby accumulating valuable experience for subsequent treatments.

In recent years, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital has achieved significant milestones in advancing the Heavy Ion Therapy Alliance and establishing 50 expert workstations. As the only hospital in the world operating two heavy ion therapy systems simultaneously, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital remains steadfastly committed to the continuous development and innovation of cancer treatment technologies. The Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center is the second clinical application center for heavy ion therapy in China with independent intellectual property rights, operated by Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital. This system commenced clinical operations at the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center on November 15, 2024. To date, the center has completed photon and heavy ion therapy for over 400 patients, covering diseases such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, and glioblastoma.
Professor Zhang Kaixian’s visit and guidance reflect another embodiment of the Lanzhou Heavy Ion Center’s philosophy of "Gathering Global Cutting-Edge Technologies to Benefit Cancer Patients Worldwide." The center not only focuses on introducing internationally advanced heavy ion therapy technologies and inviting experts from countries such as Japan and Germany for technical exchanges but also actively engages top domestic clinical experts. Through activities such as ward rounds, consultations, and lectures, the center promotes standardized clinical practices, homogenizes diagnostic and treatment standards, and continuously strengthens the foundational development of the discipline.
