Hong Kong University Student Delegation Visits Wuwei Heavy Ion Center for Exchange

On the afternoon of May 13, a delegation of Hong Kong university students visited the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital to conduct a tour and exchange activities, with a focus on understanding the development and application status of domestically produced heavy ion technology.

During the exchange, the delegation members toured the sand table model room, the core treatment area, and the smart hospital command center. Guided by professional explanations from the center’s staff, they observed the operational status of the heavy ion therapy system and the construction of high‑end diagnostic and treatment support facilities. They listened carefully to detailed presentations on the principles of heavy ion technology, clinical application outcomes, and research progress. As they toured, they asked questions and gained an in‑depth understanding of the practical application of heavy ion technology in tumor radiotherapy. The delegation spoke highly of the major breakthroughs achieved through independent innovation in domestic heavy ion equipment, and expressed that this “national heavy instrument” has not only filled the gap in China’s high‑end radiotherapy equipment field but also provided a precise and efficient new treatment pathway for cancer patients worldwide through the “Chinese solution.”

As the birthplace of domestically produced heavy ion technology and a national benchmark for heavy ion clinical application, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center is renowned in the industry as the "Jinggangshan" of ion radiotherapy. Leveraging its strong research capabilities and extensive clinical experience, the center has successfully broken through multiple core technical barriers in heavy ion technology and independently developed nine globally leading heavy ion treatment techniques, driving the development of the domestic heavy ion medical industry. As the first medical institution in China to operate two heavy ion treatment systems simultaneously, the center has accumulated mature and valuable practical experience in the synchronized clinical application of dual systems, achieving breakthroughs in multiple treatment areas, including thoracic tumors, single-fraction same-day treatment, precision radiotherapy under ventilator control, and precision radiotherapy for bladder cancer with accurate bladder capacity management. In particular, the center has established unique advantages in precise heavy ion radiotherapy for thoracic tumors. The center's original techniques, such as "single-fraction precision radiotherapy with organ-tumor spacer implantation" and "dual Bragg peak lattice radiotherapy," have successfully completed numerous challenging complex tumor treatments, achieving dynamic precision throughout the entire course of radiotherapy and maximizing the protection of normal tissues and organs.

In addition, the center's original "heavy ion therapy combined with whole-life-cycle physical and mental health management model" deeply integrates internationally advanced radiotherapy technology with full-cycle humanistic care, providing cancer patients with integrated, comprehensive health protection covering diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation, and physical and mental wellbeing. To date, the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center has completed treatment services for over 2,800 cancer patients, covering all provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China. The center has also attracted international cancer patients from countries such as Australia, Belgium, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, reflecting the global influence and clinical recognition of domestically developed heavy ion technology.

At the conclusion of the visit and exchange, the delegation members highly affirmed and fully praised the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center for its world-class radiotherapy equipment, its standardized and comprehensive tumor diagnosis and treatment system, its excellent and comfortable medical environment, and its multiple original achievements in heavy ion medical research and clinical application. They unanimously agreed that the leapfrog development of domestically produced heavy ion technology—from nothing to something, from following to leading—is a significant manifestation of China's technological self-reliance and self-strengthening in the new era.

In the future, Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital will continue to deepen the clinical application of cutting-edge heavy ion technology, focus on precision diagnosis and treatment of various tumors, strengthen specialized exchanges and research innovation, and continuously improve the quality of medical services and treatment standards. The hospital is fully committed to becoming a benchmark in heavy ion tumor diagnosis and treatment, contributing even greater "heavy ion power" to safeguarding the life and health of the general public and advancing the development of China's heavy ion medical industry.
