In May, the early mornings in Wuwei still carry a hint of chill, yet within the radiation oncology department of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital, a focused and warm atmosphere of clinical care already fills the air.

In the early morning, Professor Yee-Min Jen arrives at the department on time to begin a full day of clinical work. As the 9th President of the Taiwanese Society for Radiation Oncology, he has dedicated over thirty years to the fields of radiation biology, tumor radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and hospice and palliative medicine. With deep dedication and continuous refinement of his medical skills, he has published 68 SCI papers. His profound professional knowledge and extensive clinical experience have established him as a senior expert in the field of oncology.

Now, having crossed the strait and rooted himself in the Northwest, he selflessly devotes his lifelong learning and compassionate spirit to the people of this region, protecting the life and health of every cancer patient.

True expertise is revealed in the smallest details – treat every patient as family

Every morning, Professor Yee-Min Jen first holds a case discussion with the medical team of the department. After thorough evaluation and reaching a consensus, he then leads the team into the wards for rounds.

Entering the ward, Professor Ren always greets patients with a warm smile. He first carefully observes the patient's mental state, then leans down and gently asks about their sleep and physical condition in a kind and gentle tone, as warm as a family chat.

For an elderly patient complaining of a dry throat after esophageal cancer surgery, he listens patiently, performs a careful physical examination, gently touches the patient's neck, personally tests the temperature of the water at the bedside, and kindly advises the patient to drink warm water and swallow slowly. The medical records in his hand are densely filled with clinical annotations, condition notes, and treatment adjustment plans. Every stroke and every line embodies his sense of responsibility as a physician rooted in the Northwest, deeply engaged in clinical practice, and dedicated to protecting his patients.

Multidisciplinary Joint Diagnosis and Treatment: Making Plans More Precise and More Compassionate

In his clinical work, Professor Yee-Min Jen consistently advocates the multidisciplinary joint diagnosis and treatment (MDT) model. He leads and convenes experts from various disciplines, including radiation oncology, medical oncology, imaging, pathology, and nutrition, to conduct joint consultations for complex and difficult cancer cases.

During the discussion, he listens attentively to the professional analysis of each specialist, and based on his own decades of clinical experience, provides scientific and precise diagnostic and treatment recommendations from the perspective of radiation oncology. He always respects the professional judgment of every team member, guiding experts from different departments to weigh treatment efficacy, patient tolerance, and quality of life. Through repeated discussion and continuous refinement, they ultimately develop an integrated, personalized, scientific, and optimal treatment plan for each patient.

After each consultation, he repeatedly reminds the team to thoroughly communicate the treatment plan to the patient and their family, fully respect the patient's wishes, and ensure that the diagnosis and treatment are both professionally precise and humanely compassionate.

Imparting Knowledge, Nurturing the Next Generation, and Staying True to the Original Aspiration

Beyond his frontline clinical work, Professor Yee-Min Jen consistently upholds the responsibility of teaching, guiding, and mentoring, devoting himself to supporting the growth of young physicians in the department.

He integrates practical clinical challenges with cutting-edge developments in the field, delivering specialized academic lectures on core topics such as tumor radiotherapy techniques and clinical decision-making. Drawing on the latest international literature and his own clinical experience, he explains complex concepts in a clear and accessible manner. When faced with enthusiastic questions from junior doctors, he always responds patiently and thoroughly, generously sharing his clinical expertise without reservation.

He often reminds the young physicians: "Medical technology must always be practiced with warmth. Cancer treatment should never be a one-size-fits-all approach. Always tailor individualized plans for each patient, and while ensuring treatment efficacy, strive to protect the patient's physical function and quality of life."

A Dedication Across the Strait, Building Hope for Life Together

Through seasons of change and over the course of five years, Professor Yee-Min Jen has remained steadfast in the Northwest, deeply committed and unwavering. His busy figure has become a warm and inspiring presence at Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital.  

With five years of unwavering dedication, he has stayed true to his original aspiration and compassionate heart, fully devoting himself to the development of oncology services at the hospital. Working alongside the entire medical and nursing team, he has helped the Wuwei Heavy Ion Center continuously enhance its diagnostic and treatment capabilities, steadily advancing toward the goal of becoming an "International Heavy Ion Treatment Demonstration Center."

Professor Yee-Min Jen provides regular, on‑site clinical care, teaching, and research at the hospital, vividly embodying and fulfilling the founding mission of Gansu Wuwei Cancer Hospital: "Gathering world‑leading technologies to benefit cancer patients everywhere."

In the future, the hospital will continue to deepen exchanges and collaboration with top medical professionals both domestically and internationally. Renowned experts from various fields will be regularly invited to the hospital for outpatient consultations, ward rounds, teaching, mentoring, and research guidance.
